It seems fairly obvious that Labor is going to attempt to wield this defeat as a weapon with which to fight the next election. That's what pollies are good at - utilising whatever they can from the detritus of a failed campaign for future battles.

Good day Rechtub, will not stay long.
Just thought I would drop by and say thanks. Thanks from Belly for? the Bell;y laugh! huge fun. Every time short bottom Tony says this I shudder with it. He knows, I know, you may not, it is not gonna happen. We will see Abbott's replacement, soon, take a different path. We will see Gillards replacement, soon, get together with conservatives. And both their offshore scheme and Labors will be legal. THEN THE BOATS WILL STOP. Tiny Tony has further damaged him self! His politics first country second, a thing he admits to, is again on display. See you in another thread. Posted by Belly, Friday, 14 October 2011 3:45:53 PM

Has anyone noticed that even the ABC has stooped to making more and more opinionated statements when ending a news piece. One could only hope the usual 'tsk tsking' and head nodding of the commercial current affairs commentators would not spread like a virus to dear Auntie.
It seems the 'Keystone Cop' landscape of the political world is being mirrored by the news media. Or is it the other way around, it is confusing and I am a bit over the blame game and talk of strategies and tactics over good policy and partisan discussion. Tony Abbott's childish opposition tactics on all things government are almost equally matched by Labor's response to his kindergarten methods. Keystone Cops. That is an understatement. "Call an election," has been the mantra of the Opposition
right from the get go. To no avail and it's not going to happen until 2013. It's time the Opposition woke up to that fact and instead of spreading all that negativity - gave the voters reasons for why they deserve the votes at the next election. Continually blaming the government doesn't do it for most thinking people. Posted by Lexi, Saturday, 15 October 2011 6:20:10 PM

Lexi, I have to love you loyal support you have for these incompitent fools.
BTW, do you truly believe they can implement this new tax and not stuff that up as well? Just to give you a heads up on just how scared they are, they shoukd have a trigger for a DD election, but I will bet my bottom dollar they won't be gane to, just like Rudd. Dear rehctub,
There's no need to be concerned about the government stuffing anything up. It's Mr Abbott's continuous attitude that is stuffing everything up. Mr Abbott tells us that "I'm the leader, come follow me." Doesn't matter what you'll get from him - because he doesn't have a plan. The Opposition is looking increasingly like a single issue party that's had a lot of the wind taken out of its sails now that the polluter's tax has been passed in Parliament and is going to be passed in the Senate. When the polluter's tax turns out not be the doom and gloom that Mr Abbott's blatant lies predict it will be - many voters will begin to question what else does he really have on offer - and as has been the case to date they will realise - it's very little indeed. He's slowly morphing from a fierce pitbull into a yippy silky terrier - as his recent hysterics on the Parliamentary Question Time demonstrated. The party had better replace him quick smart - if they want to have any sort of leg to stand on. It's not looking good for them. Posted by Lexi, Sunday, 16 October 2011 4:52:43 PM

Sadly that musical interlude is all too apt, just speed up Question Time and there you have it. :) Posted by pelican, Sunday, 16 October 2011 6:42:45 PM

Mr Abbott is not in control and has no sway over what these fools do. If he did we wouldn't have a carbon tax now! This chronic blaming of Abbott for all the blunders is becoming a joke of the highest order. Next you'll be blaming Abbott for the coming ice age!
It's incredible how much power this Abbott bloke has without even being in office! The force must run strong in his veins sheesh! Posted by RawMustard, Sunday, 16 October 2011 7:40:35 PM

Here was a surprise. I heard on one of the Sunday political programs
I can't remember which, that Abbot's proposal was for the first batch of 800 to go to Malaysia then all after that to Nauru. Now that was a compromise that Gillard should have been able to accept. In any case I believe the govts proposal is a once off anyway. Posted by Bazz, Monday, 17 October 2011 9:07:06 AM

Juliar Gillard formed government with the Greens and independents, to govern and pass legislation. Tony Abbott did not and does not govern.
100% of the responsibility for governing rests with Juliar and her cabinet, and 100% of the blame for the additional taxes, and boats lies with her. If her coalition cannot pass legislation, then it has failed. With respect to the immigration legislation, Labor after condemning the pacific solution for nearly a decade dismantled it, and helped the smugglers launch an armada of boats resulting in an estimated 400 people dying at sea. Their answer is a half cocked Malaysian solution that would have its deterrent of 800 people filled in 6 months, which is rejected on humanitarian grounds. Then when their coalition partners will not help them pass legislation to strip the refugees of all their protections, they then approach the coalition with a "take it or leave it" approach and are surprised when they won't touch it. Chris Bowen wants to compromise with the coalition and is rolled by Juliar and the left. It is the responsibility of the Labor/greens coalition to govern, and it is clear that they can't. Well, call an election and let the people decide.
