In the lead up to the last election Greg Sheridan predicted that despite all her tough talk & posturing:
“Gillard also described the asylum-seekers as illegal immigrants, denounced the people-smugglers as evil and made plain her desire to stop the boats” http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/opinion/why-labor-cant-stop-the-boats/story-e6frg76f-1225898187380 A Gillard Labor govt would be unable to handle the asylum seeker scam: “Gillard could well get back into government and deliver nothing in the way of stopping the boats” And he was correct. However, he did get one thing wrong –he said : “Our Prime Minister has many virtues… but on this she is profoundly dishonest” He grossly over estimated her integrity -- we now know that on MANY ISSUES she is profoundly dishonest . I am afraid old mate you have served your self a double serving of humble pie here for a future meal.
Driven by Tony Abbott, the unloved but very much existing, dislike of these boat arrivals, the Government did what it has done with live meat exports. Reacted quickly poorly and with out doing its home work, it did the work of a Taxidermist in the East Timor joke. It however,[Shadow are you prepared to be honest here] looked quietly at the idea from the current oppositions spokes man on refugees and such. He months before, put into words his idea,WE SHOULD DO THIS DEAL WITH IRAN! Even if greens and a host of first impulse actors do not yet under stand Labor took this policy's and civilized it. Abbott, his red necked front bench fear it, if it works ,and it will the boats will stop! Good lord no! been such a dog whistle it must not work! The plan has intentions, Australians are not to see or read about, the owners of our comic book press, want too to keep the headlines coming. I got this wrong at first. But the only two things standing in the way are Abbott and bleeding hearts in the house who refuse to see it for what it is. An opening for the UNHCR in to this country. The release of thousands of long term refugees to come here. And end to boats and drowning at sea that sees ONLY THOSE WHO CAN AFFORD TO PAY come So under mine Labor but admit it is without concern for those who wait those who can not pay criminals and in the end? fear conservatives will be unable to flog Labor after they fix this. Belly, are you trying to pin this Malaysian solution stuff up on the coalition? I think that is a very long bow to draw.
Even when KRudd first looked at rolling back the pacific solution, the public polling was that 80% favoured strong border protection to stop the illegal boats. This may have been exploited by the libs, but it was always there. This is a corner that Labor painted itself into by itself. Posted by Shadow Minister, Friday, 8 July 2011 1:13:07 PM

No not spin why has it taken you so long to return serve.
Fact is Shadow Minister your side and mine are guilty of gross mess making here. We both you and I must except that truth. And take our medicines too. See we both know 60% of Australians, enough to swing elections, remember they do not include the fixed in party members, greens ,some in yours and mine. Swingers however as Howard proved are for sale on this issue. I truly think public opinion and Abbott's use of the issue as a club, right now a feather is a club in his hands. Demands Labor stop the boats. The Iran solution, true mate, came from your Shadow Minister, he asked that explorations take place,to send them to IRAN. I truly think, we stole the idea, we mucked it up at first , as is our usual way sadly. I did too seeing it as 5 for 1 swap. Got that wrong, once public opinion got its way,no unattended children to be sent,it became clear it had every chance of working. We would stop the boats, like or loath us it is both party's intention now,and take a lot more over the years of our refugees from Malaysia than the 4.000. Now even the slow reaction SM to promises about kids on there own had hard headed reasons behind it. Mums and dads know if the child is here they will follow. I hurt for the kids the pain the awful fate of these human beings. But it is impossible to overlook those WHO HAVE THE MONEY TO PAY come this way. Those who sit in camps and have for years surely need us more. Others will condemn Labor for being pushed by Abbott, some truth in that. But be that as it may Australians in numbers that still can remember Howard's stopping them demand no less of Labor, yes SM I am charging your team and defending mine with what I think is true. I think your team is not unhappy if Labor fails here, sad if it works Posted by Belly, Friday, 8 July 2011 1:41:39 PM

Shadow Minister you will be aware, on both sides of this debate emotionalism and thoughts powered by other things rules. From both sides blinkers are often in the way of true understanding. I offer this link for comment. And remind those cringing in the corner at my apparent heart less comments. The fact is, these refugees? Pay from $10.000 to $20.000 and even more to come here. OK refugees, but financial or in fear of death? What is to come of the 4.000 we will leave, some too poor to even eat well in Malaysia? Posted by Belly, Saturday, 9 July 2011 5:39:45 AM

2 months on from the announcement, which according to Chris Bowen was expected to be finalised in the coming weeks, shows no sign of progress what so ever. With the parliament due to break up at the end of the week.
Given that Juliar took nearly 7 months to admit what every one else knew i.e. that there was no East Timor solution, the suspicion is that the deal is close to collapse.
The other alternative being discussed, is that with the break up of parliament, and the release of the carbon tax details on Sunday, an agreement that would be unpalatable for the Australian public is announced in the hope that it will avoid scrutiny.
