As to the surprise as the sheer number of trained soldiers, many of whom are very highly trained (and remain on the active/inactive lists just in case), for some reason we have the largest, fully trained, force available since the end of the second world war. We have the largest 'standing' full-time army that we've had, essentially, ever. I know those who would wish 'peace at any price' would rather deny the obvious, but the facts are there. Nobody who understands the terrible losses involved in either the first or second world wars is beating the 'war-drum', but the number of resources and the limits on them (and competition therefore), caused both.

India and China are not locked in an arms race for the hell of it, the problem is, of the available resource heavy locations in Asia, we own most of them. Maybe it is time to wake up, smell the coffee and actually have a look at the world as it "IS".
