I mean, it is one of the worlds worst kept secrets, that the Taliban is really the only surviving Pashtun player from the last Afghan civil war (http://english.aljazeera.net/indepth/features/2011/03/2011314162928307158.html). They, with the help of the Pakistani Armed forces removed all the other outstanding Pashtun warlords (according to some estimates, the Taliban consisted of about 1/4 local Pashtuns and the rest were Pakistani "volunteers" at the time of September 11: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taliban & http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_war_in_Afghanistan_%281996%E2%80%932001%29). Nor is it a secret that the Northern Alliance had an Air Force base (built by the Soviets during the occupation) rebuilt entirely at the expense of India (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayni_Air_Base & http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farkhor_Air_Base) as well as a hospital built on the border of Tajikstan & Afghanistan.
All the current NATO/UN led initiatives are really achieving is to weaken various tribal warlords, for whom the Taliban is an overarching "home-guard" type movement, while strengthening others. All the while, other, more prudent, Pashtun nationalists (which is all the Taliban are) are working their way further and further into the corrupt Kharzai Government, with funding, weapons and training provided by our supposed ally, Pakistan. The very best outcome possible, playing by those rules, is to cause the rise of a non-Pakistani backed warlord, that can represent the areas that are predominantly Pashtun. Unfortunately, most have been killed by the Taliban (see above links). Meanwhile, our "allies" are engaged in a spot of ethnic cleansing in the Baluchistan Province (Pakistan/Afghan Border : http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/mar/29/balochistan-pakistans-secret-dirty-war), where they are responsible for the deaths by torture of many, many Baluchi Nationalists (http://www.amnesty.org/en/news-and-updates/pakistan-must-provide-accountability-rising-atrocities-balochistan-2011-02-23). Why on earth are we protecting these scum? While we continue to do so, we continue to ensure the virtual enslavement of Baluchistan, most of Afghanistan and continued terrorist attacks against our allies, our friends and ultimately, ourselves. Meanwhile, the Baluchi-People have repeatedly requested the assistance of India (and the rest of the world), seeking independence from Pakistan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balochistan_conflict - the map form that page - http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6e/Major_ethnic_groups_of_Pakistan_in_1980.jpg) shows what the fighting is about (A free Baluchistan would be a major supplier of natural gas and would leave Pakistan landlocked and without resources). Pakistan would consist solely of the western Punjabi and tribal Pashtun areas, redistribution of which along ethnic lines would provide a solely Pashtun Afghanistan (which would solve most of the problems) while India would resume the remainder of the Punjab.
Removal of the export route for opium (produced mainly in the Helmand Province - bordering Baluchi-Pakistan) would bankrupt the Afghani Taliban (the Pakistani Taliban is only slightly related to the group of the same name in Afghanistan, the Pakistani Taliban is motivated almost solely by its desire to resist the Pakistani Army). When the Pakistani Army is reported to be advancing into Taliban territory, it is not clashing with its proxy in Afghanistan, but with internal elements who wish to remove the Pashtun areas from Pakistani control. Allowing or supporting India in its absorption of Pakistan, or part thereof (to the Indus in the South and the Punjabi region in the north) would be the shortest route to decreasing tension in the area, particularly if it were accompanied by Indian Assistance to the Baluchi people to form an independent Baluchistan in the South (with the border at the Indus River & the upper junction of the same). Pakistan has no real value, it is not an ally - it has played its friends false for far too long. It was the bastard child of Indian Independence, it was never truly considered and time is up. The west can not continue to prop up rotten regimes that bite the hand that feed. Its importance in the region came solely due to the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980's and as a counterbalance to Iran. However, friends like this we don't need. Guess what Aaron. The USA is covertly protecting the poppy fields that the Taliban destroyed prior 2001.Remember the heroine drought. Now Afghanistan under the auspices of the USA produce 90% of the world's heroine.A good little money spinner for the sale of arms to the Taliban by Western arms dealers.

The subject should be talked about.
Should be reviewed. It is true that we just can not trust this country. In my view unlikely we ever will be able to. Its sins however do not equal those of Saudi Arabia. Lies are currency and weapons in this part of the world. As time passes my view has changed I doubt it is worth the costs we pay to *free* this part of the world. Education , true education not blinded by a religion that seems no longer to care about it, is a better weapon than our blood. Arjay, it gets harder to ignore your silly ideas. I truly think you add to miss information, just maybe that is your aim. Posted by Belly, Friday, 15 April 2011 5:10:10 AM

Harrumph! Bloody right! Let's just nuke these people! Leave it to the Indies to bomb Pakistan, we can always get the Chinese to nuke the Indies if they get too big for their boots.
What about the Saudis though, can we get Israel to nuke them, along with Iran and Iraq? Let's clean up the world in the only way we can be sure. A clean slate, start again in a few hundred million years. I know, we'll call it 'Project Noah' and retire to a few underground bunkers till the sun comes out again. Good thinking old chap. Pakistan is every bit as much a failed State as Libya, Syria & Afghanistan, the bulk of its expenditure is on its armed forces, which are needed to repress the bulk of its citizenry who want out. Meanwhile it is essentially fighting against the very people who are fighting so hard to keep it intact... One would hope that someone in the field of journalism would consider investigating the same. We cannot win the war on terror while we continue to pay for the fielding, training, equipping & indoctrination of those conducting the same.

I do find it rather disheartening that nobody has seriously considered the references (linked to) and the nature of the discussion. It is highly improbable that Nuclear weapons would be used, it is far more likely that the launch sites, etc. would be removed preemptively, whether by the Indian's or the Yanks, who knows? Pakistan is the greatest source of instability on the face of the Globe presently and we continue to support the same, while paying through the nose for the privilege. It is rare indeed to have the Guardian, Amnesty International, the UN and serious observer's in agreement. Maybe instead of flip comments, someone might actually consider what is written?

Aaron you amaze me.Join the dots.Every Muslim country invaded has either oil,gas or other resources like $ trillions of Lithium in Afghanstan.Iraq was a lie ,there were no weapons of mass destruction but there was lots of oil.Now they are looking for a good excuse to invade Iran and steal their oil.Iran has not one nuke but Israel has 200+.Why are there not weapons inspectors in Israel?

What & how can the dots connect Israel and the Pakistani Government's decision to continue taking aid from us and our allies with one hand, while continuing to fund the very people fighting against our Soldiers and those of the Afghan Army? What do you think, that Amrullah Saleh is a Mossad Plant? He fought with Ahmad Shah Massoud (the Lion of the Panjshir: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahmad_Shah_Massoud - assassinated by Al-Quaeda 09/09/2001) and then with the Northern Alliance (Massoud was continually denied weapons by the CIA)? He comes from and retains the support of the fiercely independent (predominantly Tajik) Panjshir Region and is a Muslim.
These and the neighbouring regions are the people being supported by India (which also has more nukes than Iran) and which will need every bit as much oil as China in the next decade (which will also exceed EU/USA Demand). The thread is about Afghanistan and the internal war that is being played out by us, the US, NATO, the UN & Indian proxies against the Taliban (the wholly owned & funded subsidiary of Pakistan). How in your mind does Israel somehow get involved? This is a regional dispute between Iran's neighbour's to the east & north, being played out in Afghanistan, it has no conceivable link between Israel and anyone else (except in fantasy land I suppose). How come no-one ever focuses on the fact that India is also a MAJOR Nuclear Power (as is China) with no weapons inspectors? You ignore ACTUAL untold truths (even Amnesty International & the Guardian accept them) of what is going on, what is happening continually, who and what is causing the death/disfigurement of our troops (and our allies troops)? You are so caught up in Conspiracies (which presumably include Amnesty International/etc) that you are deaf to the entreaties of the people on the ground? Maybe with a little digging, you'll discover WHY so many people support Pakistan and it has NOTHING whatever to do with Israel, although it may have something to do with NeoCon's (whoever they are) & their dislike of India. I didn't know that Iran had any nuclear weapons Aaron1975. But I do know from the revelations of Israeli whistle blower and hero Mordechai Vanunu, that the Israeli's do indeed possess nuclear weapons technology.
It may have been thought necessary by the people who supplied Israel with such offensive capability, to do so when they did ?. It does however up the ante in the Middle East, in relation for the potential for catastrophe. The supply of oil and the supply of pain killers or other valuables/essentials have always been linked; and are, the product of war and human nature. Only those countries that can guarantee themselves supply of all the essentials, can consider themselves victorious in war, and truly free, when it is all said and done. Donald Trump said so much about ancient concepts of war, in a recent extremist rant as part of the preamble, in his bid for the White House. The Middle East focus is the reason why we have haven't already swung our attention to the Sth America's, where the worlds remaining oil reserves are located, and the suppliers of Nth America's favourite recreational analgesic, cocaine, exist. The Russians and Europe are now bearing the brunt of the Heroin problem, leaving the Yanks less interested in a solution in Pakistan/Afghanistan to the poppy crops. The next battle front will be in Sth America, if the Middle East implodes into irredeemable conflict. Truly worrying times Aaron1975 Posted by thinker 2, Monday, 18 April 2011 8:52:24 PM

Given Mossad's incredible reputation for thoroughness and it's taste for "false-flag" operations, I'm always amused when people cite a semi-literate, known-pacifist, with no relevant technical skills, supposed disclosure of the, worst kept secret weapons factory in the world. I don't believe I've ever seen any record of an Israeli Nuclear Test however... Israel had unlimited access to Uranium ore as a result of its Military Support (Import/Export) to South Africa
As for Iran, they are working on Nuclear Weapons, India already has them (and has tested them quite openly) as has Pakistan. Unfortunately for Pakistan, they have very little prospect of competing with their larger, extremely belligerent neighbour when it comes to building anything (for starters, they don't have the access, even the Russian's aren't dumb enough for that). The real Nuclear Powers remain the EU, USA, Russia, China & India, of course, the various alliances make more troubling reading. Posted by Aaron 1975, Monday, 18 April 2011 9:29:41 PM

Still everyone else has been caught ONLY through testing, makes you wonder, I mean Cui Bono? Surely Israel wouldn't have benefited from a false leak that Dimona was more advanced than it was, or would it?
By that yardstick, I cannot imagine any workers from the Indian, Pakistani or Iranian Nuclear sites being "Allowed" to leave the respective countries, let alone go backpacking around the world... Of course, even if he was set up, he still released information that he had been told was Top Secret, thus the jail sentence. As to India, they have conducted several tests (http://www.fas.org/nuke/guide/india/nuke/) while Pakistan is demanding that they not be admitted to the exclusive club of Nuclear Powers, with control over who has access to what (http://in.reuters.com/article/2011/01/25/idINIndia-54400920110125), I suspect that deal will be a quid-pro-quo for the American's continued support for Pakistan over Baluchistan. When dealing with Nuclear weapons, especially in South/South-Western Asia, India is the regional Superpower. Which has squared off several times with not only Pakistan but also China in recent times (it has Mig-29's, at least one Aircraft Carrier and an awful lot of shiny new equipment). The dynamic is quite interesting, India has refused to fall into either camp completely, it has some Russian, some American, some British arms and material, which all up gives it a considerable advantage over anyone else in the region (except their neighbour to the north). Israel is a mid-weight bit player on the far-western edge of Asia. It has successfully armed itself so that it is not in serious danger (defensively) from anyone. The only "supplier" country that has armed itself enough for the coming years is Iran and that won't be sufficient for long. Neither are involved in this conflict. neuther may be provoking this
or both might..but the only surity is israel is still oppressing its semite/arabs.. thus any who monger for war [without fixing their own house first] is regarded as destracting from the main game *[the genocide of palistinians and stealing their lands] yes its easier to say lets drop depleted uranium on the pakies just like we dropped it on other arabs..and the latest libiya [who alone with israel* have in recent times..dropped micro bomlets [cluster bombs..;..made in usa]..on civilians.. along with depeted tipped bombs [it seems its a deliberate attempt to mutate their kids into the monsters..zionists want/need them to be] in short there is a certain warmongering supirority in those of zion..constantly calling for more war the crimes in the name of israel need be fixed first lerts see if we can actually end a long/long war ..before beating up the next one fear and lies is no way to serve god who gives arabs their life as much as zionist israelie jews to kill anyone demeans god who alone sustains all living jews have had a fair run at ruling it over the goy its time they returned to 'their' homeland and made peace in their own backyard.. before beating up for more pieces in the yards of others make peace not pieces time to end war.. and stop mongering for more war i dont know you from adam but i do know of the works of those claiming to be the only people of god your lust of making war reveals the delusion you think to serve god...[life] ..but realise your WAR's..are serving satan..[death] *peace not pieces* Posted by one under god, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 1:05:06 PM

Why, given that the USA is in a $14 trillion hole, is it paying to field both sides in this war? Is it because of Pakistan's Nuclear Weapons? If so, why worry? Remove American Support for Pakistan and any Nuclear Weapons they do have will be taken out by the inestimably stronger Indian Armed Forces (India is about to overtake China as the most populated Country on Earth).
Allowing India to overrun Pakistan is about the only realistic option to bringing peace in Southern & South-West Asia at any time in the foreseeable future. Allowing the new Country (that lies where Pakistan is now) to split off Baluchistan into a new nation, while allowing Afghanistan to split along ethnic grounds is also a good option. The close ties between Tajikstan in the North and the Northern Alliance would see that area strengthened, while the lawless border areas would revert to Pashtun control.
Trying to hold everyone's hand in this war is nonsense, we cannot afford to field both armies and to incur casualties from weapons purchased with our & our allies aid money. True peace for Afghanistan lies in finding a Pashtun leader with enough strength to hold out against both Kharzai (whose brother was recently killed by NATO) and the Taliban themselves. Some of the anti-Pakistan rebels in Baluchistan might hold the key.
