About all that is necessary in Libya is to ensure that the Rebel Libyan Stronghold on the Coastal strip at Benghazi remains. Recognition of a Council of the Rebel Leadership (as France has already done) allows for the supply of humanitarian and other aid, as well as military assistance to flow through the coastal ports as well as through the Egyptian border. The Rebel forces in Eastern Libya consist of Light Armour and Infantry (along with a huge number of incredibly willing, but untrained volunteers) which is insufficient to allow them to take the offensive against the heavy armour of Qaddaffi-Loyalist Forces.
I'm sure the various forces involved in assisting the Rebel's will be more than happy to provide heavy Main Battle Tanks to the Rebel leadership in response for a favorable position once they control the oil. Training of vehicle crews & infantry can (and probably will) take place in Egypt, Italy, France, Germany, etc. The Rebel's will then have the upper hand in terms of complete control of the air (via the UN) and newer, better equipment than forces loyal to Qaddaffi, with better trained, better equipped infantry to boot. Once the Rebel Council/General's oust the dictator (and control the oil), we have yet another potential member of NATO (big chance - why Russia & China have their noses out of joint). But the longer this lasts, the less chance there is for Qaddaffi loyalists to win. The extended resolution, which allows for airstrikes on armoured vehicles (which are found to be advancing on Benghazi) is the key, that and recognition of the Rebel Leadership. As for the "agency" behind the changing fortunes of Middle Eastern "Dictator's" fortunes, I am seriously impressed with the work of Al Jazeera, which I would say is at the heart of the popular uprisings. Put as simply as possible, by:
(1) ensuring journalistic integrity (which I am ashamed to say suprised me, given the sideshow that "Arab" journalism had been previously - ie. Palliwood/Hezbolliwood/etc); (2) providing a trusted source of relatively unbiased reporting to the Moslem world; (3) showing the benefits that flow to the majority of inhabitants of some Moslem Countries (those that have more freedom & less restrictions, also a "fairer suck of the sav" to state the obvious); (4) the Journalistic bravery (they have lost several reporters) to cover "unpopular" subjects (under some regimes); and (5) their willingness to continue fighting for the freedoms we take for granted - which is, I believe DIRECTLY responsible for the bulk of the uprisings to date. Al-Jazeera is quite probably, at the present time, ranked with Reuters, BBC and few others. It is a model of what Journalism CAN accomplish in a comparatively short time. I sincerely salute the same, it should serve as a shining beacon, this is what the media can be. Shame ours is more concerned with ratings, Carbon taxes (or whatever "Precious Pressure-Group Policy" ('PPP') is on today) and the mindless drivel that they seem bent on driving home. It was not okay for Bush/Howard to get rid of a dictator but fine for Obama/Gillard to invade another country. Where are the call for them to be held for war crimes? Isn't the left so hypocritical.

Oh yes, the limp-wristed end of the Labor Movement, which has the gall to describe itself as the "extreme left" are hugely hypocritical. How that applies here is not so easy to understand?
The Libyan Rebel Movement/Council/whatever sought International Support & Recognition, which LED BY THE FRENCH is happening. Intriguingly, the airstrikes on the convoys of armoured vehicles (that the Libyan Government is suggesting were being driven by women & children apparently) was carried out by Mirage 2000s & Eurofighters, piloted by Italian & French Pilots (according to the international media). Such strikes fall within the ambit of the UN Security Council Resolution, but what a surprise, when the American's aren't leading the way, it is "not an issue" in Europe, they are merely European's helping fellow human's to achieve democracy. Aaron 1975, be careful who you call limp wristed left.
I am not limp wristed and not against this UN action. Runner is from the far right Christian right or I am no judge. The INTERNET is playing a big roll in the middle easts changes. I earnestly hope the opposition wins here. Runner infers, no states Gillard and Obama have invaded? can you think that runner? The under informed can be more dangerous than some weapons. Like a great deal of issues, the only exercise some get is jumping to conclusions. How? can any Christian not care about the fate of hundreds of thousands in this country. No invasion will be needed and the world will be a better place for the action taking place. Posted by Belly, Monday, 21 March 2011 2:51:14 PM

Aaron,
Your optomism is commendable but i won't hold my breath waiting for the rebels to win in Libya or, even if they do, that the people will be better governed. This applies to the other ME countries as well. I think the West should not be involved in any way and let them sort out their own mess. The Arab countries are the ones that should assist the others. Recall Iraq! The West toppled Heusain and the country had a huge celebration. This lasted about 2 weeks and then the Sunnis and the Shi'ites started blowing each other up, trying to be top dog and they are still at it. They see minor religous differences as more important than democrocy. They are too stupid to take the opportunities given. Would not surprise me if Egypt and Syria go the same way. I hope I am wrong but time will tell. We should not interfere. Posted by Banjo, Monday, 21 March 2011 4:32:32 PM

Belly, if you are not from the despised loony-left, then the comment was never meant to refer to you.
Banjo, Given the nature of this particular conflict, I'd suspect that if the EU can commit to protecting the Benghazi/Tobruk Harbours and the Egyptian Border Enclaves, that it is only a waiting game. Every member of NATO will be looking to offload military hardware onto the rebels (plus training), in return for payment post-revolution. Several General Officer's and entire units (albeit lightly armoured ones) have gone over to the Rebel's in the East. With an arms embargo on Qaddaffi's regime (UN Sanctioned) and de facto recognition of the Rebel's as the rightful government, continued airstrikes will degrade the defensive capacity of the loyalists to below that which can be overcome by the offensive capacity of the newly rearmed/re-equipped Rebels. As for Egypt, the Moslem Brotherhood, etc. are the major losers from the latest events. The Pro-US (or US-dependent) General's are in charge, they look like retaining control too (if they lose it, they'll lose EVERYTHING, like the Shah's General's lost out in Iran). I'm very interested to see what happens with Syria, already Al-Assad has moved to remove the "individual's" involved in putting down the protest(s) so violently... Whom is fooled is anyone's guess. I do know that Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Kurdistan & NATO as a whole, would benefit from the domestic overthrow of this despotic regime. It would also seriously weaken the position of Iran. Yes, the internet has played a major part, but without facts & the reporting thereof by a trusted source, the internet is worthless. Posted by Aaron 1975, Monday, 21 March 2011 6:31:52 PM

Aaron in fact no one in this thread, so far is from the loony left.
I am guilty of calling them that myself, but Labor and left of center proudly. I am no saint, and just as guilty as anyone, more than some. But generalizations are not facts, some times unneeded and not worth the effort. You may well be surprised to know ,well you should not be, but Labor and Rudd tried to lead the world on this issue. Afraid, no use hiding it, I am unhappy with a section of multi culturism. But hold real hope these middle eastern uprisings may be the start of a better life for the people. Gaddafi's? we for too long let him use us the west,we do use such filth too but thanks to the net and your stated news broadcaster,I shared you first impressions,we are seeing rebirth of hope. Shalom: Situation reminiscent of run-up to Cast Lead
http://www.jpost.com/Defense/Article.aspx?id=213413 Vice Premier Silvan Shalom on Wednesday said the situation in Gaza was reminiscent of the run-up Operation Cast Lead in 2009. Three Grad rockets, several Kassam rockets and dozens of mortar shells have been fired into Israeli territory in recent days. "We may have to consider a return to that operation," Shalom told Israel Radio. "I say this despite the fact that I know such a thing would, of course, bring the region to a far more combustible situation." Webmaster's Commentary: Of course, nobody really knows who is firing these rockets just when Israel needs an excuse to go back into Gaza, but like the murdered family at Itamar (killed by an Asian worker* they cheated out of his pay), ..these things by default are blamed on the Palestinians for political* reasons. Given Israel's long history of the false-flag attack as a tool of statecraft, the most likely situation is that Israel's agents- *provocateurs are firing these mortars and rockets in order to frame the Palestinians, just as Israeli agents in Egypt bombed British and American assets and framed the Egyptians, or how Israel attacked and tried to sink the USS Liberty, again in order to frame Egypt. Gilad Atzmon: United Against the Anti Israeli Goyim http://www.gilad.co.uk/writings/gilad-atzmon-united-against-the-anti-israeli-goyim.html "The enemy changes, as does the nature of the struggle, and we have to boost activity in this sphere," an MI official said. "Work on this topic proceeds on the basis of a clear distinction between legitimate criticism of the State of Israel on the one hand, and efforts to harm it and undermine its right to exist on the other." I am left confused here, who exactly decides what ‘legitimate criticism’ is? Webmaster's Commentary: There is nothing legitimate about demanding a right to exist while at the same time denying that very right to your neighbor! It is just how Israel does these things. http://www.haaretz.com/news/diplomacy-defense/barak-israel-facing-regional-earthquake-and-diplomatic-tsunami-1.351285 http://www.businessinsider.com/egyptian-market-crashes-2011-3 Posted by one under god, Thursday, 24 March 2011 7:36:41 AM

It is the Fascist Republican after him, that you need to worry about. America is not going to go down the collectivist road to Socialism or Communism. We fought too long against it in the Cold War. America will however go down the collectivist road of Fascism. Fascism is simply the merger of the power of the state with the power of the Corporation. Fascism could easily be called Corporatism. Our Corporatocracy creates policies to support corporate interests like the Wall St banksters, the oil cartel, the media monopolies and the Military Industrial Complex. http://www.newsobserver.com/2011/03/21/1070908/palin-skips-bethlehem-in-visit.html http://revolutionarypolitics.tv/video/viewVideo.php?video_id=14379 Netanyahu & Company feel fully confident that they can conduct another military assault on Gaza (Cast Lead 2), and to slaughter every man, woman, and child left standing. Is Libya being bombed by bloody U.S. Zio thugs because Gaddafi wants to introduce gold dinar?
http://www.kavkazcenter.com/eng/content/2011/03/22/13882.shtml The present World Economic Crisis has forced a number of governments to consider introduction of an interstate gold currency, writes a minor Russian oligarch Sterligov on his blog. Since gold yuan coinage was announced by China, talks about the gold standard had been brought up in the Middle East. The main initiator of non-payment in dollars and euros is the Leader and Guide of the Revolution in Libya,Colonel Muammar Gaddafi. He called on Arab and African world to adopt a single current -the gold dinar http://revolutionarypolitics.com/?p=5030 AIPAC Fundraises Off Of Jerusalem Bus Attack http://thinkprogress.org/2011/03/23/aipac-fundraising-jerusalem-attack/ This morning, a bomb struck a bus in downtown Jerusalem, killing one person and injuring dozens more. Jerusalem police called it a “terrorist attack,” the first in Jerusalem in seven years.President Obama condemned the attack “in the strongest possible terms.” Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Salam Fayad have also condemned the attack. I do not think the Iranians will allow the Alawite clan that rules Syria to be overthrown.
I also suspect that Assad could be every bit as ruthless as Gadaffi or maybe even more so. And with Iranian backing he would be a tougher nut to crack. Posted by stevenlmeyer, Friday, 25 March 2011 4:49:18 PM

Under1goat, I take it you are certifiable, can you please F** Off? This is a serious thread, looking at current world events, not even remotely related (well, apart from being about the middle east) to Israel & the Palestinians. You are embarrassing yourself and the membership of the forum by trying to turn EVERY thing that is happening in the ME into "Israel".
The people of Libya are entitled to live in peace, with the right to govern themselves and not be under the rule of a despotic lunatic. The UAE (amongst others) are not only in agreement with, but engaged in, the action being taken against Qaddaffi, who is a Libyan (Sunni Arab) who has stated that "Execution is the fate of anyone who forms a Political Party" (M Eljami, ME Quarterly), has systematically tortured, enslaved and killed his own fellow Arabs, while spending massive amounts on arming Palestinian and other Terrorist groups (and training them), yet NOW he is supposedly Jewish? OK, please inform us oh enlightened one, how you picked up on this, while the rest of the world (especially the Middle East - where he followed Nasser's "Pan-Arabism" & created the "Islamic Legion")? For the sane & rational, Assad is being VERY CAREFUL with the growing protest movement. The ratbags he has placed in his army have just reportedly fired on protestors again though. Given that Washington would like nothing more (or Saudi Arabia or most of the Arab Emirates, who oppose Syria because of its links with Iran) than to "empower" Syria's Sunni Moslem majority to take over the Government. Libya is on its way out of the headlines if that happens. As it stands, the UN Mission is still conducting airstrikes on Military Forces around the Rebel-held areas. They are also offering to provide Air Support to future Rebel attacks/assaults. As the Qaddaffi regime is blockaded, the new Libyan Government is being recognised & thus will be entitled to purchase arms (on credit - based on the oil wealth of Libya) from anywhere in Europe. But while this has been happening, very few Australian's (or others) have noted that Syria has been going through a similar process. The majority of Syrian's wish to be rid of their Genocidal Overlords, ie. the Baathist Party & 48 years of Emergency Governmental Power. I'm sure the US/UK would be loath to see Syria smashed straight after Libya, by France especially (which is the former Colonial Power after all) and even Turkey, which has long had issues with Syrian-Backed Shi'a & Kurdish Groups (and has also suddenly realised the ACTUAL strength of NATO).
France has a Carrier Group in the Med now, Italy is using Sicily as a jump-off point, while the UK is using Malta.
One has to wonder, why is all this happening now? At least, if the world is allowed to see the genocidal conduct of Assad, maybe the UN Security Council will also allow for a NATO led mission to crush Syria. At least that would allow the majority Sunni Country to be led by Sunni leaders (The exiled-King of Syria is a Hashemite, in Jordan), which would also lead to peace in Lebanon.
