The Federal Government has matched the Queensland Government with a $1 million dollar donation towards the floods in Queensland. Given that $599 million has just been allocated for third world countries due to your environmental 'vandalism' and to compensate corrupt Governments to prevent climate change, I really see this as an insult to Aussies. Why make such a stingy announcement?

Before all the xtians on OLO get up in arms, let us not forget that after nine years of drought, and constant prayer vigils by fearful faithful, the amount of rain that we have had dumped on us is entirely the fault of God, and those who demanded the drought be eased.
Thanks for nothing fellas. As for the stingy approach by Gillard, quite so. She is happy to throw $500 million to unqualified people posing as 'chaplains' without a second thought, but deliveing basic infrastructure where and when it is needed is beyond her. And let's not overlook the use the money to Indonesia is to be put to. It will be assisting the Indonesian madrassahs to churn out more of their 'faithful', and maybe we will even see a rash of Baptists going there to 'save' them from the 'wrong' religion too? Runner can type sense on occasion.
What amounts have been directed to similar floods in recent times? Perhaps we could redirect the needless subsidies that would otherwise build and run redundant religious schools. rusty. Posted by Rusty Catheter, Friday, 31 December 2010 8:05:48 AM

I like the droll comments from a couple of Aussie "cockies", One said "the longer the drought that harder the rains", another said, "it's amazing how a flood buggers up a good drought". It's a pity Dorothy McKeller didn't work for the Met. Office.

$1M does not seem enough. However, I would like to know more before making a judgement. TBC's comment about priorities in terms of money allocated to what is ostensibly personal matters (eg. Chaplaincy programme) compared to community benefits in disaster relief highlights some of the oddities and disparities in funding decisions. However, does anyone know how this $1M is to be used. Is it to assist in the re-building infrastructure (that was my sense from the news). This does not seem much however it is not the only money allocated by Federal Government. There is usually flood relief packages for individuals, businesses and farmers as well. http://www.daff.gov.au/ludwig/media-releases/2010/december/assistance_for_flood_affected_communities Close to a billion dollars was spent on drought relief and I suspect the government will continue to add more to the pot in relation to the floods. (Although there were some concerns that part of the money was wasted in red tape) Australians are usually generous donors themselves when it comes to disasters both at home and overseas. Donations can be made at major banks or via charities like the Red Cross. Posted by pelican, Friday, 31 December 2010 9:03:03 AM

they gave more to that big, black fattie to come over and spout her self-opinionated trash to the swooning sychophants waiting for her.
Considering she's already a billionaire, the offer to Queensland is obscene. Then again, any action by the Aussie government is usually obscene. I suppose they couldn't afford any more as they were maxed out by pensions etc for former PMs and GGs. Australia, the lucky country. Posted by Austin Powerless, Friday, 31 December 2010 10:53:24 AM

Runner ,first thing I EVER saw you put in print I agree with.
But lets look closer. Costs for repairs to roads rail Schools in fact all government things state or federal will be paid for by both governments. Already Australians have given over 5 million to the states fund to assist. These seemingly feeble first donations of just 1 million are for instant help, just maybe much more will in fact be given even within a week. So your point seems to be do not give to other country's? An easy target, populist one too, but face to face with a child dieing of starvation? I think most, not all, of us are better than that. This event will cost us all a great deal, no one more than its direct victims, in my view Gillard and that lost lady from QLD could/should have sold this much better ,but will give much more. True Pelican, the subsidies to farmers will continue from drought to flood, while their kids get edumacated in exclusive boarding schools at our expense.
But if you knew the state of Qld main roads, many of which are Commonwealth responsibilities, even prior to this mess, you might understand the contempt here in Qld with which 'government' in general is held. Crean came, saw, and insulted recently when inspecting the main road into the coalseam gas and coal mine areas. The road from Brisbane to C'ville is the Warrego Hwy. This carries freight in and out of this emerging moneypit but Crean and others refuse to provide a decent road. Equally, the Qld govt refuses to build a railway line and forces all freight onto the Warrego instead. Someone else has commented on the 'privatised' QR earlier. Well, 40% is stil owned by the State, so you can bet your boots 100% of the repairs will come from Qld taxpayers, no doubt consuming all the monies Blight 'stole' via 'privatisation'. I am probably the most cynical person, in relation to political parties and politicians, that posts on OLO, but I have to be fair and put the record straight.
The fund the Qld Gov and the Feds each gave a million dollars to is a hardship fund run by the Red Cross to help those persons in dire need. One mining company has also contributed a million to it and I think the fund has currently 5 million dollars. The public can donate to this fund and the Govs simply kickstarted it. The Red Cross is the administrator. There is little doubt that both the Qld and Fed Govs will contribute much more to schools, public buildings, roads and LG infastructure once the waters receed and assesment of the damage is done. In the meantime there are people in need that will have access to help. This is how I understood it from an ABC interview with the Qld Premier last night. >> Asia 3 November 2010:
Before leaving Jakarta, the Prime Minister announced Australia will give $500 million to build or upgrade 1,500 Islamic schools in Indonesia. << Do you know how much a house costs in an inner city suburb of Sydney, about a million? There will of course be further funding but the insult is in the first response, disgusting but not surprising it shows the contempt that this government shows for those who on the face of it are not Labor supporters, country never supported Labor. I immediately thought of Gillard’s comments on not funding the pensioners because they are too smart to vote for Labor. They hold most us in contempt except the young demographic that do not know their apex from their backside. Posted by sonofgloin, Friday, 31 December 2010 2:53:05 PM

Shock! See I told you that the Australian Governments are backwards.....and like I said on another thread.....they think so little of you, your worth is less than a dog.
Home is where good governmenting should begin. "Oh but not in Australia....No...."that would be stupid....wouldn't it (rollies eyes ) More care is taken for out-siders (like Boat-people),that means what? More jobs that your own children don't get......over-crowding/lack infrastructure that cant support the numbers now.....poor people well......if poo was worth something....poor people would be born with-out butt-holes......and the lists goes on,on and on. This is where the Greens have all the commonsense concerning these problems Australia faces today. Care for our own first....and if we have a little left over, we will help where we can. Can we look again, I stand by my comments it was not put out very well.
And yes in part agree with runner. However look at the posts, the flippant ones, the unknowing ones and,,, well the xenophobic ones too. I have never heard about that 500 million to build those Indonesian places of whorship, , but if true understand it would be a bribe,, to gain assistance in stopping boat people. both governments however face maybe more than a billion dollars to repair this insurance about the same. Could be a great deal more. We all face impacts on our economy and food supplies/prices. It is a big world, full of thoughts ideas values, we each have that right, but if truly held some views expressed here are not to be respected. Posted by Belly, Friday, 31 December 2010 6:34:31 PM

Sometime in the 70s, I'm not sure just when, I was in Kavieng, New Ireland, one of the larger New Guinea islands, not too far from Rabaul. Kavieng was a minor centre then, with a dozen or so Europeans, & 800 to 1000 local melanesians.
It was not long after the Newcastle NSW earthquake. As I walked up the road a couple of local [Melanesian] cops came up to me, pushing a wheel barrow, with a pile of money in it. When I asked what it was for one told me it was for the "nu cassel" gourier, [earthquake]. Incidentally, they did not want my money, this was their show. I said that was very nice & he went on "Australia him help us, now him all bugger up, we help him". When I said it was not all Australia he said, "no masa, big pella buildings him go down" I had to agree. I later learned that they sent over $1100.00 to Oz. At that time for the locals working in town the urban wage was $18.00, & for the plantation workers, the rural wage was $12.00. I'll take Melanesian generosity over the Canberra type any day. Hasbeen this may bring about dizzy spells, make you itch all over but I believe you.
That day I was at work 128 klm north of Newcastle. The road shook we had no idea why, until the radio in the truck told us. And such events bring out donations such as you speak of. I can give first hand information, the under privileged give first. I have seen pensioners who never can afford it give. Now,has to be said,Deep Blue, why, I clash very often with hasbeen think I always will/must. Did you enjoy the night? How did your contributions add to the thread. Hasbeen here we disagree, you would never have said such about a conservative government. Both the leaders you spoke of are sitting in the ejection seat, not likely to be around next time, and they did not present this clearly at first. But you I and even Deep Blue will pay via tax's a great deal, most know and understand that. Banjo mirrored my last post ,it is clear manufacturing an issue, blaming any one for weather, is childlike. Right now my poor country seems anchored by wrong leadership on both sides of the house. Take heart, this year may remove mine and your saddle bags filled with mud Turnbull/Shorten are a chance. Belly,
I have a critisism of the Qld and Fed Governments over the gift of a million each,to this fund. They did not make it clear exactly what they were doing and thus invited critisism and people getting the wrong idea. They brought it on themselves. We will give Australians do, it will not be enough to take away the fear and hurt, but we will try.
Need to start this year with a little self indulgence. We are at it again, telling each other what we do not like about each other. BUT WAIT there indeed is more, without that opportunity this forum is doomed. OUG you miss the whole point, yes it seems one here comes here, well like this mornings AFL star. We have far different opinions of our selfs than others of us, Needless insults, needless bad ,sometimes filthy words, pointed remarks about others intellect. Are the evidence I use to judge some. It has been said I can give it but not take it *that is the cowards retreat* I counter punch, with out fear or favor. But I do not come here to prove my ability to find reasons to insult or to try to justify to myself my intelligence. If I drink it is enough to do that, but not impose my self on others. Drinking ,if it is a reason to other than enjoy company and life is a hard partner. Posted by Belly, Sunday, 2 January 2011 5:57:31 AM

What dribble! While I welcome our new posters, may I ask that we do not get involved in things we do not understand?
You too OUG, did it slip by you? in another thread that gentleman issued one of the worst insults seen in my years in OLO. Aimed at you,a history of comments from that one person seemingly influenced by some thing other than clear headedness. Now for the silly, insulting views it is the fault of people building on flood lands. As Slim Dusty said, the best crops are always in flood lands. The cheeky beggar who insults my country men for building , well you lack understanding of the subject. And last tell me OUG, and those who defame governments, who will pay these costs? Blind Freddy knows our tax's will, that bloke also knowns this tragic but unavoidable event will impact on our economy. Am I right? can it be true? some here put the blame for natural events on politicians and people? floods in Pakistan, cyclones? Tsunamis? opinions are free but some are worthless and blind stupid. If someone lives in dangerous areas they should *understand the risks*. Not understanding the land has caused many tragedies.
I'm not saying don't do it. I'm saying that when ya get caught out, don't whinge that the government handouts are not enough. If ya live, work or play in a risk zone, and then get caught out, don't blame nature and don't blame the government. If someone needs to be blamed ----blame yourself.
