ASSANGE is just a small piece in a MUCH bigger jigsaw.
Here is a sequence of events. Make of them what you will. 1/ GLENN BECK is approached by GEORGE SOROS executives demanding he 'shut up' or bad things will happen. 2/ 5 days later... VAN JONES (Marxist former whitehouse Green jobs CZAR)gives a talk in which he outlines that the LAST piece in the program to take power in America (For Progressives/Socialists) was 'control of the media' 3/ Wikileaks breaks. OUTCOME. There are TWO main possibilities for the Wikileaks event. 1/ Shut him/it down with heavy regulation of the...MEDIA 2/ Let him go on....and cause further chaos world wide, undermining governments. In either case the progressive agenda is triumphant. My Opinion. DECEMBER 20TH 2010 is the day when it will basically be decided if there is to be a Military Coup in the USA. On that day, the Federal Communications Commission will decide on the issue of media control. The push from progressives(Communists) like Rev Al Sharpton is "Get Rush Limbaugh off the air". (Glenn Beck would be a close 2nd there) If the FCC does in fact implement controls such as Sharpton, Van Jones and other communists want. There will be no other opportunity for the American people to have freedom other than a Military coup, to re-establish freedom and electoral choice. PROGRESSIVE HEDGE FUND (against Republican electoral victory)... is the 13 million latino illegals the Dream Act would make legal. If this goes ahead, the revolution will be complete, America will be a Communist State. At this point...I believe a Military Coup is more than just 'conceivable'. AL, a military coup in the Uass. do you not think it a little far fetched just at this point in time. The US is behaving poorly considering it was their own protocols that allowed the situation to happen. Simply they will need to change security arrangements and wait out the current revelations. It will pass and soon enough our short attention spans will be distracted by a new event.

of course newspapers are 'naturally' exempt from prosecution for reporting the same 'illegal' leaks,..go figure!

Earlier this year Google was criticized harshly and justifiably for accidently collecting gigabytes of personal information whilst on their drive around.
What would your response be if you found all your personal emails and data published for all see on Wiki-leaks or a similar site due to an individual in Google leaking it?
While I am strong supporter of freedom of information, and support the publication of official documentation, the publication of private emails and correspondence of diplomats is in very murky territory with regards privacy.
However, the majority of the blame lies with the US for allowing all their data to become available, and I would hazard a guess that far stronger security will be put in place to prevent a re occurrence.
