"Two crates of Scotch whisky which belonged to the polar explorer Ernest Shackleton are to be recovered after a century buried in the Antarctic ice.

The 'McKinlay and Co' whisky was found buried under a hut built and used during Shackleton's unsuccessful South Pole expedition between 1907 and 1909. " BBC
Apparently the NZ trust that is restoring the the hut is intending to conserve the bottle and return them to the hut as a display.
What a despicable waste I say! ;-(

The company that owns the brand wants to get a bottle and "have a shot at re creating it" given the brew no longer exists. Now that's what I call a good use of resources!
Fair's fair there folks don't you agree? :-)

Sounds mighty suspicious to me, examinator.

I'd hazard a guess that the liquor in question has already been consumed.

>>the NZ trust that is restoring the the hut is intending to conserve the bottle and return them to the hut as a display.<<

Presumably to show the tourists?

"Come to the sunny Antarctic, experience the bracing -50C climate, take a trip around Shackleton's hut, see the whisky bottles..."

Yeah, right.

Dear Examinator,

I vaguely recall reading an article a few years
ago of a perfectly preserved fish (?), that was found
in a part of Russia that should have gone into
a museum, however someone ended up eating it.

So, I'm with Pericles on this one. I too suspect
that the whiskey has long gone. And, if it hasn't,
I'll be really impressed!

You have to be careful getting on it down there. Can't just stumble out the tent for a slash behind a tree.

They were supposed to have been discovered under the floor 3 years ago and they had to wait for special tools to free them?

Me thinks Whiskey icy poles for the workers....have you seen the colour scheme of the out side? Then tell me they weren't drunk when they did that!

:-) Hic!

Nah there wasn't any strange 'corks' in the bottles. Ouch! :-(

All

Seriously, I wonder what it would taste like?

Just imagine the fund raiser they could be . Give the brewery a bottle they replicate it and make a limited numbered commemorative(collectors) bottle run then sell, auction, lottery them off at say $1000+ per bottle the profits going to the cause.(the hut restoration) Publicity etc .
Just imagine the drink names you could think up for the accompanying mixer booklet like 'Pissed Penguin', 'Yellow snow drops', 'seal stinker'. Old Leather bound and faded Gold embossed to make it look authentic of course. All written by hand and each copy personally autographed with " Best wishes #*&%#! it's cold here. Regards Boris ( every name different adding to the thrill if you get the right one) Shackleton"(most people don't care what his name was) gawd the possibilities are endless.

The real bonus would be next door to the hut, build a holiday hotel call it "Shacklton's Summer Retreat"(catchy hey?), and sell a 'knock offs' in the bar.
A percentage of the profits could go to pay for the research etc(well you don't want to be seen as exploiting it for profit a cause always hides that) .

The ultimate in wilderness holidays. I can see the brochures now, "Come and see it before before it goes", " for the person who is jaded seen every thing "
" free rescue for all For group bookings booking over 20 persons". "Outside auditorium for all politicians including one frostbite treatment."
"The ULTIMATE and unique Pole dancing a stroll away"

After global warming re name it as "Underwater World (the resort)". I want a piece of that action. Brilliant! I should be a eco-sensitive developer.
