Kyle, Austereo or the yobs that listen to him.

One thing for certain Austereo are really losing by his antics. Rather they benefit. We all know that sensation and controversy sell (get ratings). The higher the ratings to more profit.
To be fair media management is a balancing act.

If we take some of the 'horrendous' scandals of a few years ago replayed them today they would probably wouldn't raise a whimper.

The media offer two arguments one it is their "duty" (sic) to push the boundaries (Same for "art"). Secondly they are simply giving the public what they want hence the ratings.

The contra argument could be that the media is simply 'creating' a market from a potential (repressed want).

My concern is that by continually pushing the boundaries they are in fact desensitising the public in an ever downward spiral to lower brain instincts, lowest common denominator in free fall (for profit). One can reasonably ask in the interests of a functional society (we are clearly a societal species.) should we?

Since our instincts evolved/ were created as a species we have developed extra brain abilities. That of choice and judgement et al.
Doesn't it follow that we should STRIVE for better option than(as often argued) Big Brother/bees V Jungle law with suits? Surely there is a middle ground.

It can be convincingly argued that somewhere in the fog of culture there must be some basic rights and wrongs. Constantly 'lowering' the bar, can also be demonstrated, doesn't reduce victims merely renames them. Which doesn't improve society.

It isn't absolute that society is, in the short/medium term adversely
effected by individual instances (i.e. Kyle "show's" lack of just about everything). The problem is the cumulative effect of other 'responses' from their/his competitors.

Clearly in the above scenario the only winners (albeit temporarily) are those of Austereo and their commercial ilk.
Is this really good for us as individuals, the majority or society as a whole?
Shouldn't Austereo then face its responsibility and clean up their act too?

I think we should just ban any programme that pontificator decides is too low-brow. He's the connoisseur of good TV and radio, one only needs to consult him.

The only 'responsibilities' an entertainment company holds are to comply with the law. That they bend over whenever moral crusaders lobby the sources of their advertising revenue is just an example of why

a) there is no need to legislate taste.
b) if anything, the undemocratic pandering to these minority of vocal moral crusaders is evidence enough some protection is needed instead for the majority who enjoy that brand of entertainment who may have their fun spoiled.

After all it's those fans that subsidise, through their taxes, pontificators entertainment via the ABC.

When the purported rape claim was made I then already warned we better wait if there really was ever a rate before chastising Kyle.
When he made the reference about the concentration camps I pointed out that concentration camps are all around the world from time to time and so why blame the man for a particular concentration camp event long ago?

I do not listen to Kyle because he is not in my area, and so have no bias towards him. In real, I didn’t like him because of the way he came across on the media, but that doesn’t make him guilty of wrongdoing where none was intended.

Claims such as that he strapped the girl to a lie detector hardly is true as Kyle more then likely never touched the girl, rather it was someone else. We can dramatise and indeed over dramatise every thing, like the Michael Jackson thing on Hey Hey Its Saturday but shouldn’t we just be more lightly heartened?

Soon you might not be able to say “It is written in black and white.”, because then you might be deemed a racist. Surely we can do better with that then to try to pick on everything?

Life is so short and yet more and more regulations to make it more difficult. Just consider this that probably your life span would be to short just to be able to read and consider every piece of legislation, regulation, etc, you are subjected to as such, you would have no time to live life if you had to read it all, as such lets make it a real party and just do what you think ordinary is right and proper in a society and more then likely you be all right.

I view the issues with Kyle were blown out of proportion and I view we did better to concentrate on real issues such as….
