Wouldn’t two be better?
How about a system of regional government, based loosely on population, as with our federal and state electorates.
I reckon an average population of about 300 000 would be reasonable, which would mean about 70 such regions. But maybe larger or smaller regions would have better balances of local and wider concerns.
We’d do away with state and local government and just have the Feds and this regional government setup. Surely this would improve efficiencies in the way government operates and be more in touch with the people than either the larger governments, where we feel powerless to have a meaningful input, or some local governments which seem pretty hung up on what developers want and not what the residents want.
Then every so often, due to changing demographics, the boundaries could be adjusted to keep the regions more or less equal.
Is there any merit in this, or would it achieve nothing?
