What should America do with Guantanamo Bay?
Its part of another country and its subject of heated debate right now.
Is there any merit in Republican claims it must be kept a prison?
Is it not true terrorists who have done much worse crimes are in American prisons right now?
I think it is, that the whole thing could be given back to Cuba without harming American interests, what do others think?
America seems unable to leave Obama to do what he was elected to do, restore its international name

,America seems unable to leave Obama to do what he was elected to do, restore its international name'

You summed it up Belly. Obama's policies are bereft of morals but no doubt loved by the corrupt United Nations.

Dear Belly,

Guantanamo should be closed down.

There was an excellent Editorial in The New York Times,
January 17, 2009, Opinion section.

And I quote:

"That is the real nature of Mr Bush's legacy:
abuse and torture at an outlaw prison where
hundreds of men - many of whom did nothing have
been held for years without real evidence or charges.
And truly dangerous men were treated so badly that
it may be impossible to bring them to justice."

As the article points out, "...it will be hard to
close down Guantanamo as Barack Obama has vowed
to do, but the legal burdens Mr Bush is dumping on
his successor are much greater.
1) The appalling Military Commissions Act of 2006,
railroaded through Congress must be repealed.

2) Interrogation rules that respect American values
and laws and the Geneva Conventions must be set for
all Government agencies including intelligence agencies."

I can understand why the Republicans are objecting to
the closing of Guantanamo. Cheney especially.
The US signed a treaty that obliges them to investigate
any allegations of criminal mis-conduct and abuse.
They will undoubtedly be forced to look into cases of
those who tortured and abused prisoners and those who
ordered them to do it, with the real possibility of
prosecuting these people.

Perhaps Cheney has reason to be concerned.

Runner it is hard to give any value to your post.
execpt it highlights the thinking based on relidgion and your version of it, a blindness in my view.
Lets look at the issue, America in fact has true terrorists in its prisons in its country.
Name one , just one current prisoner in this Cuban prison who has done worse.
It is not possible to believe importing the lot to those prisons endangers any one but the prisoners.
It is time America became accountable for its tortures its lies its decent into being no better than its enemys.
Cuba, can anyone think the place is a threat?
Give it back.
Long after the cold war ended America needs the world to think better of it.
Runner not for a second think I am anti America, its the reverse they are much better than Republicans would have us believe, the election of Obama is proof .

Guantanamo should go, as you say Belly, there have always been laws against terrorism in the US and there are US State Prisons to hold them. Why there had to be a Centre offshore to deal with these sorts of crimes beats me.

The idea that a person can be accused of a crime, gaoled and then never offered a trial should be considered abhorrent by most civilised nations regardless of personal politics.

I was going to add that perhaps Obama's strong Christian values might make a difference but hang on...that did count for much in the case of the Republicans so that is grasping at straws.

Obama will find it difficult to go against the Conservative mainstream within Congress but the fact is ordinary Americans voted for him. They were fed up with the lack of values and anti-democratic principles being served up time and time again in the international arena by out of touch Conservative US governments.
