Because human beings have ideals and aspiration of a higher reality we realise there is an intelligent God in whose image we were intended to function for optimum moral, social and personal performance. it is in these areas we reach our highest personal fulfilment. However because we all fail our ideal selves there is a graceous God who can forgive our short comings and restore us and give to us new hope, a new life. Jesus calls it being born again, free from the past guilt of failure.

Poor old God. Give him a break why dont we and talk about farting cows instead.
