Project Hope Update as at 13 February 2009
PHHWV wishes to thank all our donors for their generosity. As of late last night we have been offered temporary housing for 865 horses and all your offers are being recorded and matched to those in need.
Requests for assistance have steadily increased over the past 24 hours. These requests range from feed, halters, leads, and veterinary supplies; to transport and details of temporary care offers.
PHHWV has trained representatives at the major control point in Whittlesea and can be located at the RSPCA tent. Our representatives have been very busy ensuring feed supplies are being delivered to affected areas and we are continuing to travel to assess and treat injured horses as access becomes available. We have also been transporting the horses that need constant veterinary care to equine hospitals and clinics.
Many horse owners and communities are now turning their efforts to raising funds for PHHWV to ensure our work can continue over the next six to twelve months. More details about these activities will be available on our website in coming weeks so keep an eye out for an activity in your area, and if you can, we encourage you to take part in the relief effort.
As you can see from the above update, this is NOT going to be a short-term project. While there is likely to be some urgency for items such as temporary fencing, feed and water buckets and first aid supplies, the bulk of our donations (feed, etc.) will be required over the coming months. Transporting horse fodder from Queensland to other states raises potentially difficult issues. All fodder must be free of fire ants, cattle ticks and certain weeds. We are currently working with DPI departments in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria to ensure to ensure that all donated fodder firstly reaches its destination and secondly does not cause even more devastation via the introduction of unwanted pests into those areas
