Indeed, some people look at the sky, or study cosmology, and exclaim "How great Thou art", others conclude "How insignificant we are". It is about the same as the difference between seeing a glass of water half full or half empty.

We are somewhere in the middle of a long-long evolution of the physical world the purpose of which we cannot begin to grasp, so it is simpler to deny it.

Whichever way you look at it, nobody claims that we are the Ultimate purpose of that evolution, only some of us think that we are the first ones on this planet - possibly, but unlikely, the only ones in the whole Universe (Multiverse) - who can contribute towards this purpose, directly by accepting it or indirectly by denying it: neither of these options is available to other creatures on this planet.

You cannot even begin to understand the workings of the Cosmos without more and more sophisticated mathematics, and - in my opinion - you cannot even begin to contemplate this Ultimate purpose without religious insights that must also be getting more and more (philosophically) sophisticated.
