No doubt all of us can think of a host of websites that ought to be banned. I personally find a whole host of websites offensive but the last thing I would want is for the government to be authorised to censor the net.
The reason for this is simple. The net is also a political tool. Allow government censorship and one runs the risk of a future government using its powers to stiffle dissent.
If existing laws of libel and slander do not go far enough, if there are special laws that need to be enacted to ensure people are prosecuted if they access child porn and the like put up the legislation.
It is a mistake to assume that power will only be used for what we would regard as 'good' purposes - we have no guarantee that by allowing this extension of government powers we are not placing some critical freedoms at risk.
