Just received and signed yet another Get Up petition www.getup.org.au/campaign/SaveTheNet This one is about the proposed attempt to censor the net.
No doubt all of us can think of a host of websites that ought to be banned. I personally find a whole host of websites offensive but the last thing I would want is for the government to be authorised to censor the net.
The reason for this is simple. The net is also a political tool. Allow government censorship and one runs the risk of a future government using its powers to stiffle dissent.
If existing laws of libel and slander do not go far enough, if there are special laws that need to be enacted to ensure people are prosecuted if they access child porn and the like put up the legislation.
It is a mistake to assume that power will only be used for what we would regard as 'good' purposes - we have no guarantee that by allowing this extension of government powers we are not placing some critical freedoms at risk.

Imagine if a guy like the Bibles antichrist (i.e. the final Adolf Hitler) grabs hold of the net?

Yeah - it's a good petition, and I have a feeling that this is an issue where the nannies might back off if confronted with serious, informed and concerted opposition. I urge every OLO user to sign it.

I definitely think the government should not have the authority to censor the internet - that would be a very powerful tool! Freedom of opinion thereby would be inhibited!

I signed too, and passed it on. Increasing any government's arbitrary powers over anything is crazy. Even the best of them go nuts with power after a while.

I too am set solidly against government intervention of any sort into internet access.

The excuse of "protecting children" is a complete hoax, when any one using the net is forced, by the risk of "infection", to deploy anti-virus software and anti-virus packages contain parental control modules for parents to censor their own childrens option.

I signed the Getup petition also, would hate to see the internet lose the sense of freedom and anarchy I get with research and discovery.

The best thing we can do to protect our children is ensure they are well informed - we can't wrap them in cotton wool, the best defence is education.

I assumed that OLO is having some software problems, since it's the only website I've had difficulty accessing. Similar problem last night too.

Even now it seems painfully slow.

it has happend that a few funny things have happend [with updates]at a few of my post sites

but not all the same problem
like an adobi update wouldnt let alex jones play[and i couldnt record]
i advised alex to reset [and it was fixed]

at the nz site he lost his web site [following an update]
reset fixed that one too

[this all is over a 2 week period]
seems updates are an issue [i stopped updating stuff]
IF they want [or need] update i just stop using em

... the anti-christ is a fiction - the real terror lies in the thought of the religious getting control of the Net ... they've done enough to screw up the World - what we need to improve things is rationality, not more fairy stories. it's the religious that are behind this latest attemtp at censorship ... as they almost always are when restriction of liberty is involved. Unfortunately, we've got political leadership which also believes in faeries at the bottom of the garden so we're in for a lot more of this.
