Democrats completed an improbable double-barreled election sweep of Congress on Wednesday, taking control of the Senate with a victory in Virginia as they padded their day-old majority in the House.
With 6 out of 10 Americans against the war in Iraq there was a clear message here from voters. This shift in power will now force President George Bush to cooperate with the Democrats for the remaining 2 years of his term in office. A decade of one party politics in America is now over and the President has been turned into a lame duck.
As one of George Bush's biggest supporters in the Iraq war this massive defeat is not very good news for John Howard.
