Democrats completed an improbable double-barreled election sweep of Congress on Wednesday, taking control of the Senate with a victory in Virginia as they padded their day-old majority in the House.

With 6 out of 10 Americans against the war in Iraq there was a clear message here from voters. This shift in power will now force President George Bush to cooperate with the Democrats for the remaining 2 years of his term in office. A decade of one party politics in America is now over and the President has been turned into a lame duck.

As one of George Bush's biggest supporters in the Iraq war this massive defeat is not very good news for John Howard.

Brilliant!

A bit of political sanity in the US at last!

I doubt it'll mean an immediate complete pull-out of troops overnight but it will make George Bush more accountable and already there are murmurings of "impeachment".

Don't hold yor breath ,impeachment is a very remote possibility ,
the net result of the election will probably be a freezing of all
kin of political business at home , with very little change in foreign
policy including irak ( the democrats will be very vary of not getting
the tag stuck on them that they " lost " irak ,for the next forty year

What a dopey constitution !
The elctors vote into "power" a different party and the old party
remains in government for the next two years, at least, maybe another six years.

No wonder they are in lots of trouble in areas aside from Iraq.

Now it remains to be seen if this lot will be any better. I dbout that they could do worse.

Whose backside will Howard kiss now? Will he still kowtow to every word that the President says if he ends up having to change direction on certain issues. Wouldn't that be humiliating.

Thats assuming his Prime Ministership lasts as long as the remainder of Bush's Presidential term.

I dbout that we will see a quick end to the occupation of Iraq, but the American people have made their feelings very clear. Now let's give Howard the same treatment.
