It's always funny when celebrities express their own stupid, poorly informed opinions. I'll never forget Sheryl Crow's solution to global warming being that we should try and only use one sheet of toilet paper every time we need to go.

Dick Smith lives up to his christian name today when he announces that:

"I believe he [David Hicks] is basically a decent Australian like his father, that we know well, and I don't believe he's ever been a supporter of terrorism. I asked him why he was in Afghanistan and it was quite different to what we've heard about ... (it was) all about trying to help independence movements.

He obviously hasn't read Hick's letters to his father. For all intents and purposes Hicks was a member of the organisation which committed the September attacks on America, as well as many other terrorist attacks. They stand as the only objective testimony concerning Hick’s state of beliefs at the time.

Of course every extremist movement regards themselves as "the good guys". One of the great ironies of life is that those who believe in committing the most horrible and meaningless acts imaginable believe that they stand on the side of right as much as we think we do. Of course they would couch what they stand for in the same moral language that people with worthy causes use to describe what they stand for. But Hicks still knew better: the 'independence' that Al-Qaeda sought was from the mythical 'Western-Jewish' domination of the Islamic world. In other words, it was a Jihad. He knew they believed in carrying out suicide terrorist attacks in order to further their cause.

I'm sure David Hicks says he never did believe in or support terrorism. This is wishful retrospective thinking that most people in Hick's position would indulge in. However, the facts stand for themselves: he trained as member of a vile terrorist organisation and accepted all of their extreme beliefs.

David Hicks should have been dealth with on the spot he was found. Terry Hicks is an extremely low-class little man who really enjoys his public appearances. He will be upset if his self-confessed supporter of terrorism, creepy little son, takes over the limelight if the greedy media and nutty members of the public get to hear about his sordid little 'story'.

As for Dick Smith - well who listens to him? He is just another ordinary citizen with a big mouth and a massive ego.

And here I thought this thread was going to be about the embarrassing performance our new foreign minister put in at the recent high-level investment conferences in the US.
A worthier topic in my 'umble opinion, as it hasn't been done to death with every Tom, Dick and Harry nailing their colours to the wall.

For my two bob, Hicks was an fool, but even if he was a fool - he was an Australian one, and our government should have at least demanded the right to put him on trial ourselves. If our laws don't apply to everyone, they don't apply to anyone.

The ONLY people who should be putting hicks on trial are the NA.

I'm meeting quite a few Taliban type Muslims these days.. you would be amazed at how you can find them when you scratch beneath the nominal surface.. confronting them with uncomfortable truths about their religion, supported by their major scholars.. and rather than abandon the faith, the simply change their values to suit what they now (in shock) know about it.

Dick Smith ? the one lesson he has value for is 'how to manipulate the media'... for free publicity. It's the only (but valuable) thing he is good for. Sorry Dick :)

I watched Dick Smith on TV and thought he was quite odd and very unbalanced.
They say there are hundreds of sleepers that have beeen here most of their lives btw.

He was so over the top shouting to declare his outrage against America.

Umm All this was after one meeting with David.

It occured to me that he might have little experience in these matters. He seemed sure he knew more than the federal police.

I mean who ever you are and where ever you are nobody makes up their minds about a persons story in one quick meeting.

He was screaming that poor david had no money and why shouldnt he be able to sell the story.( Maybe Dick will be his manager)
That got me thinking perhaps he 'should repay the Australian tax payers the money for his private plane and all costs over the years.

Let us just say if he were a silly boy he was a very silly boy and as a good Aussiue cough cough he should be thinking what he cost the battling tax payers that are loosing their homes under the changes we all live in.

Well Dick has really put the boot into the people who thought it was unreasonable that David said he met with Bin Larden twenty times and described him as = and wait for it= A really nice guy.

The letters he wrote to his proud Dad was enough for me.
