I'm no expert on this but I have the feeling that it would be on par. whenever you have big industry which, after all, is generally there to supply a demand caused by "people" you get pollution. don't for one moment forget that ALL industry reacts to DEMAND. No businessman would lay out a single Dollar if there wasn't a prospect of return. only ignorant academics argue in favour of the illogical whilst looking for bargains at the supermarket.. I have seen plenty "cheap" clothing snapped up by bargain hunters without any thought whatsoever for the workers who get paid close to nothing. those industries in turn cause much pollution. what's that got to do with whaling ? well, whaling is no different to ANY OTHER industry which reacts to DEMAND which in turn brings a Dollar. Australians & Americans criticising the Japanese for whaling is as hypocritical as Japanese criticising the Allieds about war. what would the antiwhalers say if someone came up with whale farming ? Is it really just about preserving a threatened species or is it about needless destruction as well. I do not support any activity which is not essential for sustaining us & I find all "FUN" activity which causes greenhouse gases utterly stupid.

The greenhouse emissions from cattle in Australia are about as much as our entire transport industry combined (cars, trucks, trains etc). The greenhouse emissions from whaling would be a drop in the ocean by comparison. It wouldn't surprise me if it is one of the msot greenhouse efficient meats. You get a lot of meat from a few whales.

Peterg78, I would support a petition against whaling but as long as there are Australians polluting the atmosphere with emission from "Sport" & other "FUN" related activities I will refrain from signing. It's far too hypocritical for me when we have wealthy morons game fishing. when will barbed fish hooks be banned here ? when will sunscreen be banned from the Barrier reef ? of course it would be good if the whaling nations could be persuaded to cut back but we really need to make a much better effort ourselves.
