I saw at a glance a couple of months ago in the weekly Australian military magazine/newspaper a thing about a giveaway on a book. They had a few copies as prizes etc. I put that book in the back of my mind as something to track down later on and buy. Problem is, I can't find it anywhere.

The book was called (something like) 14 (40?) months in (through?) hell by a fella called Hickok. It's about his observations and experiences as a journo in Iraq. The write up I read sounded good. But I just can't pin down any info on whether it is out, or about to be released, or even much on the writer.

Can anyone help?.

It's possible you are referring to the book:

"Forty Months in Hell" by W. Pat Hitchcock

However, I doubt it if it's about a journo in Iraq. This one's written about WW2 (I think), publish date 1996.

Good luck with that search. If you can come up with some more details, I may be able to help further, as it is, it's a bit of a stretch.

Wow, everything about that is pointing towards it being the book. lol. I WAS on a graveyard shift when I saw it so it's possible I mistook what I saw. Possibly "Forty Months in Hell" by W. Pat Hitchcock" was a secondary giveaway with the journo in Iraq one.......

Dunno. Thanks for the info though, very much appreciate it.

I've fairly recently read such a book borrowed from the library-- this one was written by a BBC journo (can't remember his name)who had studied arabic
and worked extensively in ME countries-- He and his cameraman were ambushed and shot; the journo recovered, but with paraplegia--His cameraman was killed--
I dont recall this being during WW2, but much more recent..Having travelled extensively in the area, he gives a lot of detail about ME cultures including outlying tribesmen areas.
Perhaps this is the same book?-if not- it's still a very informative non-fiction account anyway.

Ever thought about ringing The State Library of Victoria -
"Ask a Librarian" (Reference Department)? If they can't find it - no one can.
