I'm more than mildly amused that our global citizen PM has gone overseas to tout Australia's world-leading internet regulation at the same time as it is revealed not one, but three, government websites have been hacked by ChatGPT.

We're certainly world leaders in regulation, but that is nothing to be proud of as regulation is generally the wrong approach to deal with real world issues.

The first term of this government was all about regulating wages, because we wouldn't want anyone to work harder, or for less, than that person thinks they should have to, whether they are right or not. Wages up, productivity down, and there you have one plank in our inflation problem.

At the same time they want to protect us from untruths, which they classify as misinformation and disinformation, so they've banned Australians under 16 from using social media, and have set up a commissar of permissible speech. Yet every day we see more and more instances of mis- and disinformation, and more and more "social harms" such as bullying, often perpetrated by the government, despite the threat of huge fines on the social media companies for merely acting as the carrier.

And now they want to regulate AI to remove the 10% "possibility" it might destroy humanity, but are so technologically gormless they don't have proper anti-hacking technology no their own websites. With such a lack of technological sophistication you can bet their AI regulation will be incompetent.

History has shown time and again that regulation is the resort of the timid and the fearful, and almost never achieves its goal. More, not less, of the thing to be regulated, is generally the solution. So more speech, not regulated speech, and in the case of AI, more AI not less. If there is an AI out there that wants to obliterate the world you'll have more chance of catching it if you set an AI to catch an AI, rather than leaving the AI race to the completely unscrupulous and unregulatable.
