I'm more than mildly amused that our global citizen PM has gone overseas to tout Australia's world-leading internet regulation at the same time as it is revealed not one, but three, government websites have been hacked by ChatGPT.

We're certainly world leaders in regulation, but that is nothing to be proud of as regulation is generally the wrong approach to deal with real world issues.

The first term of this government was all about regulating wages, because we wouldn't want anyone to work harder, or for less, than that person thinks they should have to, whether they are right or not. Wages up, productivity down, and there you have one plank in our inflation problem.

At the same time they want to protect us from untruths, which they classify as misinformation and disinformation, so they've banned Australians under 16 from using social media, and have set up a commissar of permissible speech. Yet every day we see more and more instances of mis- and disinformation, and more and more "social harms" such as bullying, often perpetrated by the government, despite the threat of huge fines on the social media companies for merely acting as the carrier.

And now they want to regulate AI to remove the 10% "possibility" it might destroy humanity, but are so technologically gormless they don't have proper anti-hacking technology no their own websites. With such a lack of technological sophistication you can bet their AI regulation will be incompetent.

History has shown time and again that regulation is the resort of the timid and the fearful, and almost never achieves its goal. More, not less, of the thing to be regulated, is generally the solution. So more speech, not regulated speech, and in the case of AI, more AI not less. If there is an AI out there that wants to obliterate the world you'll have more chance of catching it if you set an AI to catch an AI, rather than leaving the AI race to the completely unscrupulous and unregulatable.

It is not a good idea to trumpet your vulnerabilities. So much public money going to grifters (NDIS, net zero etc) and nothing where it's needed. I think that Albo won't be hanging around as PM for much longer. He might as well take as many os trips as he can before he quits.

here are two main reasons corporations or industries beg government to regulate them - (1) because they're seeking protection from law suits and (2) they want regulations just onerous enough that upstart competitors need to spend too much to get on the bottom rung of the industry and therefore all competition is stifled to the benefit of the few players already inside the castle ie they want to use regulation to raise the draw-bridge.

Both of these are at play here. The various AI companies are terrified that they'll be inundated with law suits all the way from people claiming that their copyright has been infringed to people claiming they've been disadvantaged by following advice from AI. So get the government to regulate the industry in such a way that allows the AI insiders to ignore copyright or pay mere lip-service to it and half your problem is solved. Get legislation that absolves AI from any liability for the outcome of its product and you're sitting pretty.

Then get legislation that is so hard to adhere to that only the wealthiest organisations can afford to follow the rules. Make AI have to provide its own power and then make that power expensive. Make AI have to get permission to violate copyright and those who have already done it pre-legislation are on a winner as opposed to the start-ups. Its all about keeping the competition down with the help of the government.

Of course, asking governments to increase regulations is a no-brainer. Few governments have ever seen a regulation they didn't think should be extended. And that goes especially for the current batch of governments that is Australia.

As we saw with covid, scaring the population witless is the easiest thing in the world. So asking government to do what the terrified populace wants is the perfect playbook. That Albo and co have fallen into line is thoroughly expected.

Luckily, the US leadership has cooler heads and the campaign to kill future competition and avoid unwanted lawsuits is failing. Let's hope it continues.

So the key to increasing productivity is deregulation rather than using ai to help you get through the sea of red tape?
