Five young Israeli men—Sivan Kurzberg, Paul Kurzberg, Yaron Shmuel, Oded Ellner, and Omer Marmari—worked for Urban Moving Systems, a New Jersey, moving company owned by Israeli Dominik Suter. On the morning of the attacks, after learning of the first plane hitting the North Tower, some of them drove to a vantage point (near the Doric Apartments in Union City, NJ, overlooking the Hudson River and Manhattan skyline) to watch and photograph the burning towers.
A local resident (referred to as Maria in reports) called police after seeing them on or near a white van. She described them as jovial—smiling, hugging, and giving high-fives—while appearing to film or photograph the scene. They did not appear shocked like many other onlookers. Witnesses and later FBI descriptions referred to them as the “high-fivers”; no contemporary witness account described actual dancing.
Later that afternoon their van was stopped at a roadblock. Police and FBI detained them. Items recovered included a camera with photos of the towers after the attacks (none showing the intact towers beforehand), cash (around $4,700), multiple passports, maps, and box cutters (standard tools for movers). They were held for weeks, interrogated, and polygraphed. The company offices were searched.
