Lowy Institute Polling shows only 21% of Australians trust US President Donald Trump to do the right thing, that's the guy with his finger on the button. Trust in America has not been this low since the days of the Vietnam War, and possibly ever. I have always believed Australia blindly kowtowing to America has been a huge mistake, it has led us into wars of aggression from Korea to the Middle East, this has resulted in 950 Australians killed in all sorts of senseless American wars since the big war of 1939-1945. It has also positioned Australia as a sycophantic toady of the US in the eyes of the majority of other nations, projecting us an aggressive country in our region, and not to be trusted, and not to be taken seriously.

Although much of this sycophantic Australian behaviour can be blamed on toady Conservative governments, starting with Menzies, I believe Labor governments, with exception of the Whitlam government, have been just as guilty as the boneheads of the Coalition. The Albanese government is no exception, with its blind faith in ANZUS, AUKUS and nuclear submarines, all of which should be ditched forthwith if Australia is going to its rightful place as a totally free and independent nation of the world.

It's not about America itself. It's about the government of America.

Officially, only 31% of Australians trust the American government. No big news there.

And, the last time I looked, the same number of Australians trusted their own government about as much.

Another big flop for anti-America hate speech.

I agree with ttbn. It is Trump that is the factor that explains declining support for the USA.

Why would Australia abandon a close relationship with the most important liberal democracy in the world, albeit currently ruining its reputation beyond historical criticism by some from the left.

Australians get most of their news about the US from our mass media. Our mass media just regurgitates the views of the US mass media which is almost uniformly psychotically anti-Trump.

An interesting phenomena is currently playing out in the US as World Cup visitors get to see the unfiltered truth about the US and X/Twitter is bulging with visitors (mainly European) expressing surprise at how different the real US is as compared to what they've been led to believe it is.

mhaze,

The poll isn't measuring whether Australians think America is a pleasant place to visit. It's measuring whether they trust Trump to make good decisions as President.

A tourist arriving in the US and discovering that the streets aren't on fire doesn't tell us anything about whether Trump can be trusted on foreign policy, alliances, trade, Ukraine, NATO, tariffs, or democracy.

In fact, most Australians who distrust Trump would probably still tell you that America is a great country. The distinction is between America and its current government.

The Lowy result is therefore hardly surprising. Australians have been able to watch Trump's own words and actions directly for years. They don't need Australian media outlets to tell them what he said about tariffs, elections, NATO, or political opponents.

Your examples address perceptions of America as a place to visit. The poll addresses confidence in Trump as President. Those are two very different questions.

Did you read the poll. It was all over the place with little consistent thinking.

The attitude to Trump is based on the biased reportage of Australian MSM which just regurgitates US MSM's Trump derangement.

But when push comes to shove, Australians support the US having bases in the Australia (55%), "47% say Australia should remain close to the United States under President Donald Trump" and "63% say the United States would come to Australia’s defence if Australia were attacked."

Most Australians are in no position to judge the Trump presidency given the fractured news they receive. But when they get to see it first hand, its a very different story.

What most Australians fail to see, and we see it in spades on these pages, is that Trump is the president of the USA and his duties and concerns are only about the USA. Ever heard of "America First"?

Checking the polling, some other results that the usual suspects will try to ignore....

Only "38% say achieving the net zero target would leave the Australian economy better off,"

"41% were optimistic about Australia’s economic performance over the next five years." The lowest number since the polling began.

"68% of Australians said they were in favour of acquiring nuclear-powered submarines."

"37% said the current federal Labor government is doing quite a good job of handling Australia’s foreign policy." 24% thought it was doing a really bad job - double the number from 2024.

None of that addresses the point I made, mhaze.

Australians supporting the US alliance, US bases and even believing the US would defend Australia is entirely compatible with Australians distrusting Trump. In fact, that distinction seems to be exactly what the poll found.

Nor is it obvious why Australians are "in no position" to judge Trump. They've spent years watching his speeches, interviews, social media posts and actions as President.

And if Australians are supposedly too misled by the media to form a reliable view about Trump, why should we assume they're perfectly capable of forming reliable views about net zero, submarines, foreign policy and everything else in the same poll?

have the filthy harlots apologised for trying to gaol Trump on false charges? So many things the liars want to forget. You know like so called insurrection and Russian Collusion. I would not put to much emphasis on a Poll. Over 80% of Aussies were dumb enough to believe the clot shots were safe and effective. Tens of thousands now have attended funerals by believing the leftist grubs. I wonder if any olo posters were taken by the evil

MAGA died like a few months back.
Probably around when this song came out
mhaze must've missed this years greatest hit
Where Trump's America become an actual joke

"Your government is run by pedophiles.
They ordered you to die for Israel!"

Sing it mhaze, it's catchy.
You know you want to.

"I wonder if any olo posters were taken by the evil"

All of them except me, I'm proudly jab-free.
I think mhaze said he had to take if because of loved ones in care.
I think it was a hard choice for older people though.

In the defence of aged Aussies, anyone over 75 kind of had to weigh up whether covid might end them and were basically assured the vaccine was ok, the government backed the rollout, also some patients with RSV were being misdiagnosed and treatments with ventilators lead to more casualties I think, and they shouldn't have been jabbing pregnant women and kids, (if anyone) there were vaccine issues.

After all this time do people believe the vaccine was a good or bad thing?
Who knows.

Drunk on power America would sacrifice our nation just to get a losing war started, and then they would make a deal to save their own hides when the personal cost is too high, and our handmaiden politicians would be sucking their balls the whole way.

JD,

I'm noy disputing what the poll says about Australian's attitude to the Trump presidency, just pointing out that its based on inadequate information - GIGO.

"They've spent years watching his speeches,"

Oh you mean like the speech the ABC manipulated to completely alter its meaning to suit their prejudiced views about him? Again, when you get a biased, filtered, partisan feed of 'news', you end up getting a biased, filtered partisan opinion.

But it doesn't matter. What Australasians think about Trump is as consequential as what they think about Xi or any other world leader

No one trusts America not even Americans

Here's an Iranian girl performing a traditional dance at the Rasht Fish Market.
Trump murdered 168 girls just like her on Day 1 of his disastrous war.

rewritten:

'If you only knew Donald like I know Donald then you'd all see he's really a kind, decent and wonderful human being.
You'd take off your frilly stinky panties and fling them at him while squealing joyfully too, just like I did'.

[what is this Trump teenage groupie syndrome?]

has anyone put up any alternatives to Trump? What dei picks Kamala (we know how she got to the top) or the criminal Newsom or commo Mamdani. Trump looks bad at times until you see the filthy globalist alternatives. Just like here in Australia Pauline looks like a genius compared the dei sisterhood of Gallagher, Clueless Claire, Penny Wong. Added to that Albo, Chalmers, Bowen, Bourke. No wonder Pauline gone from about 7% to 32% support.

'This Karl Stefanovic firing feels a little bit like when they fired Tucker Carlson from Fox News.'

Tucker was originally fired for speaking the truth about the deadly clot shots. Karl apologised a couple of weeks ago for his role in promoting the deadly shots. Seems like Karl now has a conscience as he is happy to talk about the 200000 plus girls raped by muslims while channel 9 embrace the lying fraudulent metoo movement where women sold themselves for acting roles.

I've got no issue with Tommy Robinsons original grievance, which was Muslim rape gangs in Luton, he was right to stand against that and stand up for his country and he was unfairly targeted for it.

But I won't go in for any of these nationalist movements if they are Zionist dressed up as nationalist.
I take offense to the whole thing and I think the nationalists are clueless idiots,

Too clueless to realise that the Muslim immigrants they oppose were by and large a direct result of Israels wars, and they are so dumb, they are standing up for the cause of the very thing they hold issue with and are just too dumb to get it.

You seem clueless AC to what Mohammed and his followers have done right through history. Over 50 countries colonised by this evil and you are obsessed with the Jews. No doubt some have come here because of war however the elites have hated Western Civilisation for a long time. They have deliberately flooded the West with haters of decency.

Hi runner
The Muslim immigrants are a product of Israels wars.
You see spiders but I ask who put them there.

You are worried about Muslims turning our country into UK, France or Germany I suspect.
I get that, and feel that it will lead to migrant gangs and conflict.
I do not hate foreigners but I do not support multiculturalism as a policy or the numbers we import.

It's the data centres, AI and total surveillance by Zionist entities that concern me as well as their influence on governments.
While we 'value democracy' they play both sides for a guaranteed win.

You're worried about the Muslims taking over but are too focused on that thing to understand that Zionism already has.

You can be a Zio sheep if you want to, but the moment you do you become as much of a problem as any you complain about.
I don't have to support Israel to support Australia.
I don't have to support Israel to oppose Islam.
I'm not going to wave an Aussie flag if it's been commandeered by another country, I'll set fire to it and BURN IT.
I have to oppose both to be true to what I see as the countries best interests.

If you lot vote Zio, I'll wont vote Albo to stop you.
I would, but two wrongs won't make a right and I'd rather not play at all.
I'd be countering your vote but all we'd be doing is willfully destroying the country between us and no-one will get what they want anyway.

I don't care about Greater Israel or Jews identity, or their endless war on the world.
I care about a world free from constant conflict.

The country is built on equality now.
Half the country are either immigrants or immigrant born.
We have a million Muslims and a million Chinese.
We couldn't even round them all up in the event of serious conflict.

I miss the old Australia, but nostalgia isn't going to bring it back.
Half the country are either immigrants or immigrant born now
We're not going to be able to put the toothpaste back in the tube without attempting to reincarnate Adolf Hitler to do it.
The old Australia is gone.

Democracy did it, brought this conflict.
The left voting for something the right vehemently did not want, and the right voting for something the left vehemently did not want.
The left and right were so busy being enemies they forgot they are each others effing neighbours and between the two of them they just could never work together for the common good (only ever agreeing on support for the U.S. and Israel) and they effed the entire country.

Hashtag. Democracy. Downward Spiral. Use-By-Date.

Democracy can get stuffed.
I'm sick of being forced to side with one thing I don't like because I dislike the other thing more.
I'm sick of choosing the lesser evil, I won't do it anymore.

It's a shite-sandwich, it doesn't matter which half of the sandwich you choose, they're both shite.
The democracy sausage is the one this two-party preference system puts in everyone's arses.

I don't have to support one thing to oppose another.
I'm sick of being a trained monkey expected to choose the lesser evil.
I'm sick of being expected to eat shite and like it.

I don't have to support Israel to support Australia.
I don't have to support Israel to oppose Islam.

I don't have to stand with a bunch of traitor Zio firsters who have hijacked the Australian flag because I am being played as a useful idiot and am playing my part and reading my lines from the script expressing my hate and fear of Islam in Australia.

'Watch Sky News and you'll learn everyhing is the ABC's fault'
Self perpetuating bs.

I don't have to be a stupid muppet or dance to everyone else's tune.

Hi AC,

Thanks for the link, Larry Johnson is well qualified and certainly knows what he is talking about. Trump is completely delusional on Iran and the Middle East in general. Trumps sycophantic acolytes Rubio and Hegseth are incapable, or unwilling to do doing anything about it. This will not end well, with this bunch of lunatics running the asylum.
