What issue would sway my vote?
What do I think will be the main issue for the majority?
Taking the latter first... there's little doubt that it is the so-called cost of living crisis that is front of mind for most. The working and lower middle class are hurting significantly and have been for quite some time. And there is precious little to indicate to them that things are likely to improve quickly.
Before the last election I started a thread here called "The poison chalice election" (http://tiny.cc/dlwe001) with the basic premise that the economic outlook was grim and even though the winner of the 2022 election wouldn't be to blame for that, they'd eventually wear the blame.
And so it has come to pass. The people are apoplexic that their standard of living is in decline and prospects no better. And they are looking for a scape-goat and salvation. but they don't see it in either party. They see causes in both party and salvation in neither.
Neither side is prepared to tell the people what needs to be done so they throw baubles such as electricity subsidies or petrol discounts.
As to myself, I was looking for a truly liberal Liberal Party but still don't see it happening. Indeed the opposite, with the petrol discount and very little in the way of making government smaller. Struth, they are even talking about intervening in the gas industry and seconding assets. The ALP really has no clue how to confront the economic problems facing the country other than to borrow funds to buy off current anger and send the bill to the next generation.
Things looked grim in 2022 and nothing has improved since. So I'll look to see what the independents in my electorate look like, vote for one or more of them and then give my preference to the ALP over the Liberal candidate in the continued hope that and extended stay in the wilderness will encourage the Liberal Party to become a liberal party.
