Is sex selection of children ethical?

Parents in Australia are selecting children based on sex. They are looking for a child that is either male or female, after say having two boys or two girls to provide balance in the family.

The problem I have here is that people should love a child unconditionally, regardless of the sex.

What happens if a child identifies differently later on and wants a sex change? What will these parents think then?

I do have serious concerns with sex selection, but is it a free choice issue for the parents? Some have said it's legal overseas, allow the same in Australia.

What do you think?

Dear Nathan,

«The problem I have here is that people should love a child unconditionally, regardless of the sex.»

Why should you make this your problem?

People have their choice to love or not to love.
You will never be able to take that choice away.
You unnecessarily burden yourself with other people's responsibility for their own spiritual growth.

«What happens if a child identifies differently later on and wants a sex change?»

It is sad when anyone identifies themselves with their sex, or with any other attribute of their body for that matter - yet that is part of their learning curve and not something you or I can prevent.

«What will these parents think then?»

Hopefully in time they will learn that their child is not a sex.

«I do have serious concerns with sex selection, but is it a free choice issue for the parents?»

Ultimately a child is God's gift, not a parents' choice. A potential parent can make efforts this way or the other but only God produces the fruit of their effort.

«Some have said it's legal overseas, allow the same in Australia.»

Neither allow nor disallow - what children are born, if any, is none of the state's business. People should be able to make their own mistakes, then of course take the consequences and hopefully learn from them.

Oh yes? How are they "selecting"? A child is either male or female. The sex is detectable only after conception.

Are you saying that, when they know what sex the child is, the parents are saying, 'oops, we don't want one of those; let's abort it and have another go'? Do you know what you are saying?

If a couple should decide to have a child I think they should be prepared to love that child and to accept that the selection of genes that the child will have is selected from their genes.

Considering how many women are marrying other women, sex selection of children is desirable and possibly even needed to avoid a demographic crisis!

_____________________________________________________________________________

ttbn,
Obviously it would be unethical if done by abortion. At the moment the possibility of sex selection only applies to those conceived by IVF. But there are other factors that could potentially that effect. Y sperm are more fragile than X sperm and it is claimed that because of the, fighter plots have many more daughters than sons. Even the father being a smoker is enough to favour females slightly. 'Tis likely in the future there will be drugs available to knock out a significant portion of Y sperm.

(Apologies for the typo above: "plots" should of course have been "pilots")

Dear David F.,

«If a couple should decide to have a child I think they should be prepared to love that child and to accept that the selection of genes that the child will have is selected from their genes.»

No couple can decide to have a child - all they can decide is to TRY to have a child.

This is the Reality, should you dislike the use of the word 'God'. I used the word 'God' as I was addressing Nathan, not you.

As you may well know, many children are born without their parents even deciding to try having them, it just happens...

Now due to human's less-than-divine nature, I doubt you can find even one couple who are truly prepared to love their child unconditionally and without expectations. The fact is that when humans consciously have children, they do so because they feel incomplete and believe that a child would complete them in one way or another (not that anyone or anything can truly complete them, but that's how they feel). Expectations do exist even if one denies them 1000 times, and for some parents these expectations involve gender: for others gender doesn't matter so long as their child becomes a concert pianist, a doctor or an athletic champion.

If someone was able to love their child unconditionally, then they would also love any other child just the same, so they would feel no need to bring an extra one into the world.

Now it's not that I recommend this, but suppose that a particular couple's love depended on their child's gender and they insisted on having a baby, then I think it better for them to try choosing their baby's gender than to bring yet another unloved child into the world.

Why on earth do we wish to frig about with nature! As a few herein have said, a child is a gift from God, so what right do we flawed humans have to start mucking about with nature's (God's) contribution to humanity? For C**ist sake, leave it well alone. Indeed we've harmed society quite enough with this 'selection' nonsense and hell knows what else.

Dear Yuyutsu,

A couple may decide to have a child. They may not be able to carry out that decision.

I said nothing about God. Your reference to that imaginary entity is gratuitous.

My oldest granddaughter said she is not going to bear children. Should she feel the need to have a child she will adopt one.

Nathan doesn't say who or how many people are into 'sex selection'; nor does he say where he got the idea from. So, I'm not convinced that parents are actually doing it. Unless I've missed something, I am not aware that anyone can select the sex of a child, apart from artificial insemination, and he doesn't mention that procedure at all. And, as 2% or less of births result from that procedure, it is hardly an OMG event if this selection does occur.

I'm with o sung wu: leave it to nature. I don't believe in IVF. If you can't crack it naturally, you weren't meant for parenting.

Adoption. You can probably choose to have a boy or a girl - if you are prepared to accept that you have no DNA in the game, and are prepared to live with whatever traits and illness the child inherits from its natural parents. It's a pretty brave thing to do, adopting a child, who will never really be yours, and will most likely start looking for his or her real parents, with the help of do-gooding arseholes, who yabber about the 'right to know', and to hell with the people who took the child in.

Leave it to nature.

More on people meddling with nature and playing God; plus something really warped and disgusting.

Sydney's Royal women's hospital recently transplanted a uterus from a mother to her daughter. Not a lifesaving transplant, but a faddish because-we-can procedure.

Worse, the hospital's chief gynaecologist has revealed that there is interest from "other groups"; and the hospital is looking at an "option" for the "transgender population", "assigned" as male at birth (rubbish in itself) to get their very own uteruses.

This society deserves to be wiped out, as so many other degenerate societies have been in the past.

I don't know, and it doesn't matter. If they are on our dollar, they will continue to be so; the government is quite happy using taxpayer's money, so there is nothing we can do about it. In a perverted society, there will always be money for perverts. Please forget the idea that any Australian government is going to protect anybody or punish anybody in the bizarre 21st. Century. The two parties we keep putting into power are like peas in a pod.

The lockstep is particularly evident at the moment, with Dutton doing a Morrison by 'believing women', and ousting from the party a man who has just been accused - not convicted - of sexual misbehaviour. Trial by allegation. We no longer have rule of law or the assumption of innocence until proven guilty in Australia.

The Liberal Party is the worst. Labor has never tried to hide that they are scum; the Liberals have. Now that they are going downhill and losing voters hand over fist, they are proving to be scum on stilts. Not that it will do them any good, trying to be a shadow version of Labor.

Sex selection is bad for society if the gender selected is highly skewed in favour of one particular gender. If in Australia, 1000 people use gender selection to create a boy while about the same number use it to select a girl, then there are no consequences to society. I don't see any reason to prohibit the practice in this case. However, I don't support the abortion of babies of the non-preferred gender.

China is a prime example where gender selection in favour of males has created a problem where many men will never find a wife.
