I can relate to your friend from Taiwan.
I remember under the Soviet regime in L:ithuania when
any Lithuanians living overseas were painted as the
enemy - and we looked at them with suspicion as well.
Until travel was finally allowed and we got to know
each other. All of a sudden we did indeed become "family."
