- further marginalise and pressure India's constant enemy, nuclear armed Pakistan, which of coarse is not a signatory to the NPT
- complicate US relations with the US' near client state, nuclear armed Israel. Israel, as a NWS outside the NPT has enjoyed a privileged nuclear status of being an unofficial but widely accepted nuclear armed state. If India joined the NPT this would raise the issue "why not Israel?". Obama would not enjoy addressing that question as he would have the Israel-Jewish lobby breathing down his neck.
Hence the US may oppose India proposal for false reasons - especially out of quiet deferrence to Israeli interests.
