Mark Durie's observation about Khaibar is important for those wishing to understand the tension between Muslims and Jews (translatable as Arabs and Israel). Amrozi is, of course, not the only Muslim to make the point: that in the Islamic mind, the place of Jews is under the rule of Muslims, not Jews ruling over Muslims. The offence of the State of Israel has been, is, and will continue to be at root simply that it involves Jewish sovereignty over Muslims on land regarded by Islam as part of the Muslim world forever. The message is not just the message of terrorists. When a group of men of Middle Eastern origin marched to the Israeli Embassy in Canberra in the mid-1990s, the Arabic on some of their posters read simply: 'Remember Khaibar'. In their Muslim mind, Jews and Christians are tolerated, but only in the 'correct' place. I must say I am surprised no one else has made a comment about this. Is that from apathy or ignorance?
