By Joel Tozer, published 29/12/2009

Meeting the environmental flow targets for the Snowy River would see the return of a dynamic river system.

21% for the Snowy if only we could get that for the Murray!

BTW
"The Snowy River is said to be one of three most important rivers internationally",,,,Yes the other two being the Todd river and the little creek that runs by my house, where did the Author pull this "factoid" from?

The Snowy environmental flows have been a problem for some time. Our family has a strong relationship with this area being at our backdoor and a family tree which includes many born and raised in the Snowy region from the early 1900s.

There has been a devastating effect on water flows by the current Scheme's failure to adhere to agreed environmental flows.

Part of the problem might rest with the way the scheme is managed. I believe both the management of the Hydro and the environmental flow aspect co-exist under the same umbrella within the NSW Government.

Before any real pressure can be exerted to restore the flows these two management functions need to be separated.

Water management in Australia overall is pretty woeful until recent times when desperate situations have called for desperate measures - such as buy-back of high irrigating properties along the Murray.

When will governments get their act together on sustainable populations in a country where water is a valuable resource.

The restoration of flowa to the Snowy is a matter of highest priority. Until we give ecological values greater emphasis we are endangering all aspects of our future sustainability - social, ecological and economic.
