I notice that Rhett Butler studiously avoids putting any figures to his claims of the wholesale destruction of the Amazon.

Not surprising, because when you examine the actual data, and even more importantly compare different statistics properly (as I pointed out in this thread: http://forum.onlineopinion.com.au/thread.asp?article=8902) the picture that emerges is quite different to the one Rhett and his ilk are trying to paint.
