By James Bunger, published 23/7/2009

Unrealistic expectations of fossil energy supply is but one glaring error in the climate change science.

Although the author is undoubtably better qualified than several others I have seen commenting on peak oil, I also have some knowledge of the energy industry and would humbly suggest that forecasting in this area is a waste of time. I see that he at least knows enough to count coal and LNG amongst energy reserves but he should also know that identified reserves of coal, like the oither commodities, depends on how much effort companies have put in looking for the stuff. It has nothing to do with how much has been used, or any limit to coal. If he thinks he knows something about limits to oil then he should try his hand at investing in oil futures rather than bother the rest of us.
I am more intrigued, or perhaps I am amused, in his suggestion that a lot of CO2 has ended up in plant cover, and his assertion that there is 23 per cent more living mass on earth than there was 40 years ago.. sorry, what?
Does this mean 23 per cent more plant cover? I thought the earth was being denued of forests, or was that last decade's scare story? Maybe that one needs to be explained a little more.

I believe the world is already over 400 ppm if you include methane and other greenhouse gases besides CO2. The projection assumes that 'fossil' methane won't be released from permafrosts or cold sea beds so that GHGs build up long after fossil fuels are depleted. That was thought to be a major factor in warming events such as the one 56 million years ago. A recurrence could wipe out most humans.

The CO2 fertilisation argument also seems suspect with acidic oceans dissolving the shells of plankton. Crops may absorb CO2 with the help of plowing and added nutrients. Both are facing severe constraints in the years ahead. Whether the limit is 412, 550 ppm or unending the future doesn't look very bright for an expanding world population who all want to live TV sitcom lifestyles. We have used half the crude oil and it would be stupid to burn coal at current rates. Yet for all its rhetoric the Australian government seems to be actively encouraging just that. The IPCC must redo its projections based on new models that take into account new factors including depletion of all fossil fuels within a generation.

Peak Oil will solve the climate change problem in the future, but this will be after most of us on the planet have died. Google, but I plan to be among the surviving. Google: surviving peak oil blog

From my recollection many countries have huge coal resources sufficient for centuries. While the cost per tonne to mine this will increase, I cannot see the continued emmissions leading to a decrease in CO2 as per the graph.

Peak oil does not mean no oil.

OMG
Here we see a new tack from the ruling classes. After denying peak oil for years they suddenly decide it can be used to further delay and obfuscate the need for action on climate change. Is there no depths to which these miscreants will not sink. It made all the worse by the obvious intelligence and articulateness which these evil scum possess. If only they put it towards the betterment of all of us instead of their selfish and misguided efforts to oppress and control.

The facts remain that oil may decrease in supply and the price will rise. But it wont run out. There will still be plenty for those rich enough. Plenty for the military and police ill bet. Plenty for politicians and business to continue to jetset it up and enjoy the high life.

Just not enough for us plebs or for public transport. The poor dont need to travel let them stay in their ghettos while we live in our gated communities. We provide lots of jobs. We need lots of security guards, maids, servants, pool attendants, nannys. Arent we great.

That is the future people like the author have mapped out for us and peak oil. They can drive on now safe and traffic free roads, continue to fly and travel and the environment will improve all by itself without them having to sacrifice any of their god given privileges.
Only the poor will suffer as these scum believe it should be.

The childish, good-guysbad-guys paranoia of the alarmists' worldview is good for a laugh, if nothing else.

It's kind of nostalgic really; I haven't read this sort of taradiddle since I used to sneak a peak at my big brother's student newspapers in the early 70s.

I guess it's what the John Laws show would sound like if he'd been spruiking to ageing hippies instead of the blue-rinse set.

"Pollution.
All around.
Sometimes up
And sometimes down.
But always around.
Pollution, are you coming to my town?
Or am I coming to yours?
Ha! We're on different buses, pollution.
But we're both using petrol ...
Bombs!"
