Calvin aside, and the difference or the conforming part of this debate,if it was not for the good work done by the Catholic Church in South Africa, during segregation then apartheid, the plight of the black people would have been even worse, but sorry to say that is not the case in Australia,as far as it concerns the plight of the original custodians of this land, who have been living in third world conditions as for as long as I can remember, and nothing much has since changed,as far as the Northern Territory and Queensland is concerned it makes me hang my head in shame to be called an Australian,as it is a digrace that both Lib and Labor governments have done nothing much to improve their lot, saying sorry, but doing nothing much to change the situation is sheer hypocrisy

I think Calvin was a good candidate when we were looking to name man of the Millennium a few years back considering the impact his life and writings made to the world; his influence on Western thought, democracy, and social ethics; his unsurpassed depth of Biblical understanding.

However, as much as I admire his enormously positive contribution, it is clear that he was a man of his times, mortal like any other, and capable of getting things quite wrong. I think there is a lesson just in that.

His dry disapproval of music and the other arts were a sad and unfortunate accompaniment to the otherwise necessary Reformation. This is in clear contrast with the current growing church, which revels in music and creativity, welcoming people with a warmth of celebration in worship.
