The West is in decline by virtue of it's inability to breed. It is basically a numbers game and many of us in this unfolding new reality will be happy to lose.Over population reduces humanity to rat status. It brings out the worst in us.

Chris Lewis,
I don't think so either, predictions in regard to the decline of the West are somewhat exaggerated and premature rather like Fukuyama's "End of History" thesis which was all the rage 15 years ago. It seemed naive to me then and just plain daft now to everyone. I agree with your theme, no society on earth can match the Western nations in flexiblity, creativeness and humanity. The relative decline of the US does not necessarily imply the decline of the West collectively. Posted by mac, Friday, 26 December 2008 7:29:36 PM

Yep, it basically boils down to demography. The European and European-descended populations of the West are not reproducing at replacement levels. Meanwhile, the rest of the world is in the midst of a massive population explosion. Most Western countries will have little chance of weathering the coming Third World population storm unscathed. We are already witnessing large-scale Third World immigration into Western countries, as African, Asian, Latin American and Middle Eastern countries essentially dump their surplus populations on a demographically enervated West. Unless Western governments take drastic measures to permanently close their borders, this influx will continue at an increasing pace, accelerating the demographic and cultural transformation of historically Western countries into predominately non-Western ones. Within some Western countries, such as Australia, the United States, and Britain, there are already some heavily immigrant-impacted areas where the local variants of Western culture have been replaced by imported non-Western cultures. This trend will continue, except on a much larger scale, as entire countries are gradually turned into extensions of the non-Western world. Posted by Efranke, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 4:29:26 AM

For those interested in the demographic and cultural crisis facing the West, I recommend "The Death of the West" by Patrick Buchanan.
The picture is bleak, as Buchanan notes: "In 1960, for example, Western people were 25 per cent of the world's population, and in the middle of the greatest baby boom in history. They are now down to 16 per cent, and by 2050, they will be just 10 per cent. Every single Western nation is dying. The European base of the American nation, which used to be 90 per cent, is now down to 70 per cent. On present trends, European-descended peoples will be a minority in the United States by mid-century. I can't see how Western civilisation can be preserved if the people who carry it in their hearts, minds and souls are dying out." http://nationalobserver.net/2002_winter_ed2.htm Posted by Efranke, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 4:52:54 AM
