Censors and sensibility : Comments

By Julian Bodenmann, published 27/11/2008

Australia’s censorship regulations are claimed, by some independent international bodies, to be 'amongst the most restrictive in the Western world'.

I have never heard of this author and, unusually, he hasn't provide a bio. I wouldn't have thought that Graham would have allowed this.

No matter what we think of Australia's censorship (in general, I am opposed to any censorship)I will not read his article because I don't know anything about him. He certainly has an axe to grind, and we don't know why; we don't know his interest in the matter or what he has to gain by writing on the subject.

I feel terrible sorry for Julian that there is not enough perversion for him to access here in Australia. It just goes to show you that perversion does not satisfy. It just leads to the cry for more and more of it. Don't worry about the abused kids though. Just continue to scream about your right to view more filth.

Mea culpa. I forgot to add his bio after I had completed uploading the article. He is a young man with a bright future I think.

Has some one put a gun at your head Runner and made you go and see all this filth and perversion,as usual the people who cant or wont look after what their kids see, little old ladies who have trouble seeing the letters MA,R ect, and the local Christian nutters who stick their noses into every body's business but there own.
Not forgetting the radio jocks,as far as I am concerned what I see and read or do on the net in my own home, and what films I see and books I read are no body,s business but mine,if you don,t like it go live in the Vatican

j5o6hn you ask

'Has some one put a gun at your head Runner and made you go and see all this filth and perversion,'

Then again the multitudes of young kids who have been sexually abused after perverts feast on this stuff did not have a gun held to their head either. Why should you worry. You have convinced yourself that you can indulge in this garbage without affecting the rest of society. Its a pity many black and white kids know you are in denial. There are also thousands of women who are smart enough to know that images of themselves as pure sex objects is not particularly edifying

The rule of unintended consequences.

Sure, censorship is bad. However, lets say we unban movie X, which features the abduction and graphical rape of a minor. Borderline Y watches movie X and gets a little excited. Borderline Y takes inspiration and replicates the movie.

I am sure you would not want to be the one to explain to victim child Z why all censorship is bad afterwards.

You are of course quite right my earlier post defending Clive was, while related, not really in context in this issue.

I am a big fan of Clive's and from reading his books believe him to be a well-intentioned and altruistic person who looks at the world from a different view, not being afraid to challenge accepted norms.

Anyway as I said I am a big fan and look forward to his new book in which he talks about the Freedom Paradox.

Although i believe people are influenced by what they see on T.V./movies, to say that we should ban content because it may encourage borderline rapist and/or paedophiles is insane. Should we ban action movies such as Bond or Sin City because they show interesting and often hilariously inventive ways to kill and interrogate people. Should we ban comedies such as Adam Sandler movies because of characters lack of respect for people of other races/ages/sexual orientation. Where does it end. The Simpsons with Barts menacing antics. Liberalise Television and other media and allow the potential criminals to chose not to break the law rather than trying to hide us all away from the world just in case.

Runner,

Please provide evidence of "multitudes of of young kids who have been sexually abused after perverts feast on this stuff"

I doubt you would need all the fingers on your hand to count the cases where porn has had any activating influence.

I think the perversion lies in runner's mind and he is merely trying to compensate.

Runner, the filth exists mainly in your mind, and the minds of the others who "know better" and think censorship is OK.
Do you read your vitriolic words? Do the words "turn the other cheek" not resonate at all?
Problem with censorship is it gives power to those who want to judge and control others. Also seems the most "shocked" souls do most of the perverting in real life. Porn causes less damage (this is according to evidence mind you, not faith based evil labelling), than Catholic ministers!
It is time to stop tolerating this aggressive "do gooding" and put the adult herders back in their boxes!

Well said Ozandy. Its always the same in these posts - the same hysterics from the same people. Its about the difference between a culture in which one accepts personal responsibility and one where the government in whatever form orders your life.
Unfortunately this is a country with a strong tradition of wowserism and it is resurgent currently. The majority of people in this country do not ascribe to the views of the narrow and bigotted people that make remarks on this site and that support people like Fielding and Nile. This minority impose their views through moral activism and are provided with enormous support in the media and the levels of (often cowed/ often politically expedient) government. I for one an utterly sick and tired of it and it was good to read an article by anyone (no matter whether there was a bio (really!) that identified some important points in the argument against the rule of this minority. Of course he 'has an axe to grind' so does everyone that bothers to put an article on olo.
The right and the christians need to pull their heads in for a while and let the rest of us get on with our lives. Now I must go out and molest someone. Oh, the christians, the family members promulgating thier morals to the rest of us and others in authority above us already got there. But woe to me for suggesting such a thing - for thinking that these moralising prigs could be anything but saints and saviours for us poor misled sinners. Get real. Get into the 21st century.
