Malcolm Turnbull will help to reposition the Liberal Party to where it ought to be and once was - a broad church.

Turnbull is the best of a depleted bunch, they had to pick someone. Costello would have been ripped to shreds, and knows it. As long as they run a viable opposition, thats all you can hope for. It will take considerable time for any liberal party to be a formidable opponent.

I suspect that the Libs are having a sort of "Latham moment" following bad polling and putting up somebody who may be a better media performer in the Paliamentary circus, because there hasn't been much talk of major policy differences between Turnbull and Nelson.

However, like Latham, Turnbull may have a skeleton or two hidden away in his closet and Labor may feel the need to settle some old scores regarding personal attacks on leaders.

I think the decline of the effectiveness of the old terrorism and immigration scare campaigns alone will force the Liberals to quickly reinvent themselves and that can't be a bad thing for everybody.

It should be an entertaining ride over the weeks ahead.

Keith - "Look at all this hate and he's only been Liberal leader one day."

Remember that Rudd has only handed down one budget (mostly Costello's if you believe the Liberals) and he's already been blamed for the fallout from the oil price spikes, the US financial collapse and the long term decline in the value of pensions.

The public can be very fickle. The Main Game is yet to begin.
