Money spent on getting our athletes to the Olympics is money well spent.

It matters not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game that counts.

There is too much emphasis on winning medals. The money would be better spent on encouraging all the obese kids out there to play some sport in the first place instead of squandering it on the elite.

"(we do very well for a nation of 20 million people). The insecurities that are coming out because Australia got less medals than the English, reflect poorly on this country."

My sentiments completely.

Agree with comments so far. If my local State school was funded appropriately for sport and recreation it would contribute greatly to the education and well being of its students.

I'll rather we had thousands of well educated, sports loving and healthy students who will NEVER win a medal at the commonwealth /Olympic games

"The intangible benefits of investment into sport, and the arts for that matter, should not be ignored."

Nor should the intangible losses - hundreds of hours of young lives wasted on mindlessly thrashing up and down swimming pools, for instance. But 'bread and circuses' has been a rallying cry for clueless governments ever since Roman days.

As long as similar funding to the AIS and Hitleresque (torch ceremony!) Olympics is also allocated to an intellectual Olympics and intellectual AIS, but money for Jock Straps alone is a waste.
