Case workers need to be able to concentrate on securing the safety and wellbeing of the most vulnerable children in the community.

I find it incredible that the people who were caring for the girl who died from sepsis, were found not guilty.

Although I was not present in the court room to hear the arguments or the evidence that was presented. It is clear that this girl was extremely ill and had she received appropriate medical attention she would still be alive today.

Concerns were raised in the article, that the public were choking the system with minor complaints preventing child case workers from rescuing children in more serious cases. However, only three weeks ago comments were made ina major newspaper to the effect that not enough complaints were made to DOCS regarding breaches of childrens' safety standards. It is high time those given the charge to protect the most vulnerable children (those 'at risk') stopped blaming the public for complaining too much or conversely not enough, and seek effective measures to allow families access to required help at the most appropriate point of need. Perhaps those given that responsibility ie the agents require more substantial training in childrens matters. Certainly Cert IV courses are good for assistants...but fall below the standard that we should be expecting from those who deliver such services. Perhaps too, the government should reflect the commitment agents give to their work, in the level of pay they receive. This might encourage further training to be undertaken, and more appropriately trained agents to remain in case work. Finally, it takes a village to raise a child. The safety of the vulnerable of our society is the responsibility of us all. Our system should address and adequately ref;ect the level of concern our society has towards our children, rather than serve as a means of throwing blame around. As a member of a concerned public...a public concernedfor our children Iwould like to see less attention given to those who do or dont inform, and more given to what happens after the information has been given. Our children deserve the best!

This article is a refreshing view on why children are not protected in our society.

Child Protection agencies should only have one role. That is to to investigate, provide evidence and take legal action for all children at risk of of abuse.

Other agencies such as health, education and childcare are better place to identify and provide services for children in need of support and care.
