By David Kemp, published 11/6/2008

At present we do not have the viable technologies to double world food production to feed everyone.

Fewer people, not more food production.

Another "We have to do..." article that pretends that the world food shortage is in some way manageable and the situation redeemable. Phosphate is running out making most forms of biofuel unsustainable. Energy production is about to go into decline making Australia's extensive style of agriculture unviable in the longer term (and making it impossible to access phosphate from lower concentration sources). What we really need is an emergency plan to survive the coming decades while half the world starves and descends into chaos. We need to make sure that our children are among the less than 2 billion (and probably less than 1 billion) people that are around at the end of this century.

The first 2 responses are typical of the banal and trite.

How are you going to conduct the cull Mr Right/Candide? Is neo-fascism or the 'Descent of Man' your only solution?

Absolutely, we can do something at home - but this is something beyond your own backyard.

No cull required Q&A, that was just a cheap shot. Australia and Europe have naturally declining populations, as do Russia and Japan. The key is education (especially for women),access to fertility control for those who want it, and the political will to address the issue.

I'd be interested to know your views on world food/population, given that we live on a planet with finite resources.

Q&A,

I'm with Mr Right on this but as to your question "How are you going to conduct the cull?" Simple.

Let the four horsemen of apocalypse do it.
War, Famine, Pestilence and Death. They have always been the best form of human population control we have. In the end does it mater if you or I survive as long as the human species continues to exist.

Enjoy
