Great to see some open-hearted analysis of this vital issue.

Today's Aust headlines include an analysis of outlying indigenous communites described as "our 3rd world shame".

Frankly I don't feel any shame, I feel mild horror that we keep pumping $ into places that are not showing any sign of becoming economic beacons of indigenous advancement.

Remove the word "indigenous" and most of these places would be bulldozed and people politely advised/encouraged to move elsewhere.

We really need to take a collective bex and stop avoiding the reality of the doomed remote communities model that appears to drive the romantic attachment of so many well-meaning whitefellas to some sort of "traditional" indigenous lifestyle.

No doubt there are plenty of obstacles facing many indigenous people who may want to improve their lives but the role models you mention in your 2nd last para should inspire more than a few to fight against the tide of inertia.

We as a nation need to give as many incentives as we can afford to encourage people out of dying communities and into the real economy.

It's 2008 people. Let's get serious.

Steven, "indigenous disadvantage" will be with us until the day when Indigenous people see themselves as 'Australians' rather than 'victims'.

They have the same brain power as us, same opportunities, cant blame skin color these days for lack of work, or education.

I suggest that Christian aboriginals are better off, and have a reason to live. A hope and a faith and a future. ...but as 'Australians' with no reference to ethnicity or race
