A genuinely informative article. We need more of them.

I agree with healthwatcher about this article. What would make it even more useful would be some specific examples of physhing etc, how they benefit and at what expense to consumers; and some practical suggestions about how ordinary people can take better guard.

That's not to say that OLO should become merely an advice line because the political and ethical issues are crucial in the surveillance society.

I know a person.. who usually rolled up to Church in work shorts and boots.. seemed like a reasonable though rough edged bloke...one day, he rolled up in a SUIT and everyone noticed. He stood out like dogs thingies....
I didn't know what it was about... so the day came and went.. some months later, I found out he had been sucked in.. (sucked himself in) by one of these 'Nigerian Scams' type deals.. he did the following:

1/ Bought a new suit.
2/ Booked a plane to London where he was to pick up the money
3/ Tried to suck other people into it all...borrowed money to fund the trip...

The result.. Lost his home, now lives in a caravan in a caravan park in very humble and desperate circumstances and destroyed other lives in the process.

People sometimes ring up saying "Hi, I'm from Telstra, can I speak to the person in charge of your phone account".... you reply "Its me" and then say "Can I have your name and date of birth for security purposes"

If by this time you have not deliberately established that the person IS from Telstra, you could be giving your important personal details to an unknown malicious enquirer.
