Science left to count cost : Comments

I completely agree with the sentiment of this essay. The advancement of science is directly proportional to the advancement of civilisation and therefore deserves more recognition and funding that it currently gets. Indeed, a scientifically illiterate society is doomed to be a backward and second rate society.
Besides science providing the bedrock of economic security it now provides the definition for Western Civilisation. At the risk of sounding dramatic I think that it is fair to say that science IS Western Civilisation.
While religion, art and music have been in steep decline within Western society for the last 50 years or so science has powered on. It now stands as the saviour of the human race whether we like it or not as only science can uncover the technology necessary to halt the horror of Global Warming. On a social level only science can provide a way to dispel the fear and ignorance of religious intolerance that threatens all societies.
Science is the great shining light and hope of the 21 century. It is the most precious thing that we have.
