By David Rowe, published 12/1/2007

When news and current affairs programs, print and online media, are largely 'out to lunch' or off the air, time and tide do not stand still.

Perhaps famous people could book in to die on a particular day - that way we could start the debate on euthanasia again, and help the advertisers.
Though it probably won't help the 7.30 Report who are on track to do a story about Paris Hilton the way their stories have been lately...

There is what news "should be" and there is what news "is, and sadly always will be." It's just about always on holiday, succumbing to the pressure of economics and society. Our media networks will always consider news-worthy items to be what they perceive their audience wants to view. If not, they fear an adverse effect financially.

That is why regardless of the time of year, the bratty antics of our "role models" Paris and Co. will always be topics of discussions inspired by our media rather than that atrocious genocide that is occuring in that region of Africa that the majority of Australia just would rather not care about.

As for the "interested minority" you refer to, I think the news organisations would rather cater to the majority that keep them in business: the ones who've gone fishing.

Sadly the ones who are interested in true history rather than hype and gossip will have to carry out their own journalism.
