Racism and sexism are still out there and deserve the probing glare of the nation.

In my town there was a woman this year who was charged with 2 counts of attempted murder when she point poison into her ex-husbands coffee on 2 occasions On both occasions he was hospitalised, but after the second hospitalisation the situation was investigated and the woman charged. But such cases do not make the national news.

Very few men are sexist or criminals, but a recent survey shows the majority of the media misrepresent the male gender:-

"Men were predominantly reported or portrayed in mass media as villains, aggressors, perverts and philanderers, with more than 75 per cent of all mass media representations of men and male identity showing men in on one of these four ways,"

http://www.cnet.ngo.net.au/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=20729

This is where most of the sexism has been occurring. It has been occurring in the mass media, and it has been occurring for many years.

That survey highlights complete failure of the Sex Discrimination Commission, and also complete failure of other organisations such as the Australian Press Council and the Australian Broadcasting Authority.

I think we need to get this into perspective. Women have fewer work choices, lower wages and less social muscle in most public spheres. Men are under enormous pressures to provide for their families. Violence in the home is a reflection of violence in society. The notion that women "ask for trouble" and have "sexual powers" that hold men to ransom, is prevalent within most cultural groups. Turning the spot light on one cultural community over another is a racist attack! Lets have a good look around building sites, trade industries and the practices of white working class men, before we start judging cultural diverse socio-economic communities that are already marginalised, through no fault of their own

Was it you who said on 7 Nov 2006 ('Mr Lust' thread):
"At the risk of sounding conceited, I am an extremely good looking women (in that I am of european heritage and have a shape that is uncommon to these parts of the world i.e unlike most australian born women I know, I actually have breasts!). ...."

Australia is a multicultural nation but somehow I think you were referring exclusively to white women.

Now you insult white men workers.

Have you considered you might be prejudiced against white people, full stop?

Cornflower,
Perhaps I am prejudice against people in positions of power who like to pass judgment on people whose life chances are lower, for making choices and behaving in a manner that anyone who have had certain experiences of frustrations and disappointments, would make.

Returning to the article, my assessment is that the '-isms' in drastic need of attention are ageism and individualism - especially the latter, because there is no sense of community anymore and personal interest reigns supreme.

Thank you Stephen. I look for and learn from your postings. Racism and sexism are very much under the surface appearances of tolerance in Australian society. What you describe is all that gets media attention: the sensational, blatantly disciminatory and always 'other' focused tirade. Jenni

Its a bit hard to tell what the auther is on about it seems to be manely streem of consiosness stuff. But a few bits caught my eye:

(1) About the Indigenous Tiwi Island woman who was killed by her partner. Well this sort of thing will happen incresingly. Police ect are not game to work in these outback communities they get no suport at all from the locals. Its clear goverments are addopting the pollicy of leaving the communities alone to stew in there own juce. (See the refrence to the staff of the new police station). Plus the bloke was only on parole because of the pollicy not to keep indiggenous people in jail.

(2) Sheik Hilali: I cant rely work out what hes done that peple are so worked up about. Dont we have free speech in this contry specialy about relligion. Corse peple shold be aloud to say what they like about his lot too. Or is he asking special treatment because he reccons his relligion is the true one? (See also 4 below)

(3) Pru Goward’s husband, David Barnett: On what basis could Indigenous barrister George Villaflor take Barnett and The Canberra Times before a court of law? Is there a law aganst making remarks thought to be racist and sexist? Plus was what he said true about "some" Aboriginal women "wiped themselves with a rag" ect? My under standing is some means at least 2. Is there now a law agenst saying things that are not very nice even if there true?

(4) The bit about Indigenous people taking on the Muslim faith: Is this true? What on erth has a belief system emmenating from Arabia 1000 years ago got to do with Abborignal culture? Or have these new recrutes decided its the true faith? If so how did they work that out? Do they realy believe it or is this just some sort of pollitical statment?

Garth,
What I want to know is exactly what happens to the aboriginese when they do end up in jail? Have the Indegenous Tiwi now lost all faith in the judicial process and would rather die out of prison than in? Has the Sheik Hilali initiated the argument or was he simply rebutting against attacks his community have had to put up and remain silent about, for years after years after years? Other than being completely offensive, how are the hygene habits of aboriginal women of any relevance to you and I? And what kind of political statement is becoming a "muslim" (please enlighten me?)

The rellavence is the question I asked about wether there was a new law etc.

I aksed a question and was hoping to get an answer on this from one of the Abboriginese concerned. If one of them ansers you will be
able to see for your self.
