Judy Cannon gives an unexpected, but welcome, reminder of the Islamic lunatic asylum - run by the lunatics - that is Iran.

I agree Leigh

Judy has written a very balanced and insightful piece. It presents the different layers of thinking necessary for living in a harsh Islamic society.

Is it any wonder then that we are the only two commenters so far?

If an article is not trendy, ie. it doesn't adhere the repeated mantra "What I reckon about Muslims in Australia..." this is the response, 2 comments!!

Yes Pete. The cultural relativists will have to turn the page quickly on Pamela Bone's article in 'The Australian' this morning, too On the same subject, and again certainly not from a rewnowed Right Winger or Muslim basher.

Thanks for alerting me to the Pamela Bone article at http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,20867,20240784-7583,00.html

As well as doublethink in Islamic societies, like Iran, morality is a dubiously relative thing for many Westerners (as you say). The article in part reads

"Muslim sisters need our help. If she is dubbed right-wing for expressing solidarity with women in Islamic countries, the author doesn't mind wearing the label.

IN Tehran in June, several thousand people held a peaceful demonstration calling for legal changes that would give a woman's testimony in court equal value to a man's. The demonstrators, most of them women, were attacked with tear gas and beaten with batons by men and women from Iran's State Security Forces, according to Amnesty International.

Iranian women may not travel without their husband's permission but they are allowed to wield a truncheon against other women.

Do you think women in Western countries marched in solidarity with the Iranian women demonstrators? Of course not. Do you think there are posters and graffiti at universities condemning the Iranian President? Of course not. You know, without needing to go there, that any graffiti at universities will be condemning George W. Bush, not Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. (I concede Bush is easier to spell.)

You know, before you get there, that at the Melbourne Writers Festival starting this weekend the principal hate figures are going to be Bush and John Howard. You know there will be many sympathetic references to David Hicks but probably none to Ashraf Kolhari, an Iranian mother of four who has been in jail for five years for allegedly having sex outside marriage and, until last week, who was under sentence of death by stoning..."

Something about "intellectuals" specifically supporting causes that'll offend their parents perhaps.

Isn't it sickening that for the most part, western feminists don't want a bar of the real feminists, who are hard at work in vile nations such as Iran, and just about every other non-western nation on the planet.

World reknown feminist Germaine Greer has actually stated that she see's nothing wrong with female genital mutilation.

This is how you know that leftists are sick racists at heart. What cowards these types are, believing themselves to be fighters for justice, when they won't touch, with a ten foot pole, non-western cultures with any condemnation.

No, no, non-westerners have no agency you see, everything that is wrong with them is merely orientalism,

More like ocadentalism, don't you think? The notion that non-western cultures choose to see only the bad in the western world, i.e pornography, even though it happens far worse in non-western cultures.....for example, most of the laptops found in raids during the Afghanistan war (if you can call it such) of Taliban leaders, the brutes who wouldn't allow technology for the masses while hypocritically using it themselves, were found to have major pornograpy data of....wait for it, not burqa clad Islamic beauties but white western women!

I believe that, in the 70's, western feminists took on the cultural relativsm nonsense, but I believe it simply shows they are racist.

Greer and those sick people like her would never allow their own daughter to be genitally mutilated for the sake of some sick tradition from a tribal culture, but don't have the guts to tell such cultures that they're value systems are screwed up.

They basically mustn't care about women in such societies.

So, they are frauds, racists, subjugaters of truth. The real feminists are all across the Islamic world, doing real work, helping women who have had their noses cut off because they're husband thought they were attracted to another man.

Such women in such countries wouldn't have to live in fear if they had support, but those who come out to denounce the backward cultures they are a part of are denounced by the leftist feminists!

What irony.

It simply comes down to the fact that, on the whole, western feminists musn't consider their Islamic sisters as valuable as themselves, otherwise there would be protests out the front of every Islamic nation's embassy in Canberra, wouldn't there?

By God, a woman just yesterday was charged in Saudi Arabia, a nation where women don't even get birth certificates and are merely the property of vile males, with driving a vehicle!

They say it leads to immorality.

How much more immorral can a society that stones people to death for leaving Islam get?
