Can't answer your question as to why there are no indigneous characters in the soaps...though I'm sure we could all make a few guesses. I can remember when things started changing for black and Asian Brits 30 or so years ago when they started to be represented on tv. Lots of the early stuff was pretty racist (often without being aware of it!), but people were generally more naive then and the minority actors were pleased that their people were becoming more visible. Now over here there are non-white representatives all over the media at every level...though we still have to be careful that the rapper/gang stereotype doesn't box them in again. My aunt married a black guy fromn Barbados in the 50s and got a hell of a lot of abuse for it. Their kids really struggled. Now mixed marriage is fine and mixed race kids are envied for their permanent tan and their interesting cultural ancestry. It's so much better than it was. But white Brits are still learning.

There are more and more Aboriginal actors and writers now who are being seen further and further afield. We just had a mob come over to England from the Kimberleys to do theatre, dance and other arts performances/exhibitions at an arts festival. There are more and more people talking positively about Aboriginal culture. The situation has got to improve!

Good Post.

To be honest many of them do not read hense the lack of books with their faces on.

Maybe the Government could print some books and have them delivered to the different camps to try to interests the kids.

Your not going to find the kids in the schools unless reading and writing is encouagred at home.

Maybe schools by radio with things that interest the kids would work.

They need to be taught to work their land and grow crops as well.

Lots of soccer and sports clubs teaching reading while they are at it.

many cant travel to the schools so the schools wil have to go to them

We do it in other countries.

Why not Australia.

Father ORiley has some good projects in Maylasia and at least six other countries.

Always wondered why we dont make the same effort for our own?
