When Martin says” The new US legislation will require energy suppliers to source at least 10 per cent of their entire supply from renewable sources by 2020, - the Senate Finance Committee approved US$14.4 billion for tax incentives and credits, particularly for renewable sources such as solar, wind, bio-diesel and ethanol production” we should also ask about continuing with large scale cellulose projects as we go on.

Where does the US stand on wood?

About time the Bush administration "offered formal recognition that mandatory action on climate change was necessary". A small step in the right direction, regardless of how much dragging of the feet there was to get there.

But is it enough? Bush prefers to refer to climate change as a long-term problem (which it is) but refuses to recognise it as an urgent problem (which it is also). Still, it wasn't that long ago that Bush refused to officially recognise (contrary to his scientific advisors) that climate change had a significant human component...

It is this foot-dragging and these fantasies of blind faith (no doubt whispered in his ear by an oil industry exec) that will make the problem that much harder to deal with in the future when the effects of climate change are harsher and occur more frequently. Much more needs to be done, and much more urgently, Australia included. There's no more time to waste, governments must show genuine political will to tackle the problem of climate change. I can't help but feel that this latest energy bill was just a token gesture attempting to placate critics ahead of the G-8 summit that occured the following week.
