Fact: There are not six Australian employees of Newmont Mining subject to a travel ban in Indonesia as a result of pollution allegations by the Indonesian police. There is one Australian, three Indonesians and two Americans.

If this isn't right how can I believe the rest of the story?

The Denver Post 4 April 2005

"From Nevada to Indonesia to Peru to Turkey, Newmont is battling accusations of misdeeds ranging from contaminating land and water to misusing its power with local governments and disrupting communities.

...In lawsuits, internal company documents, regulatory filings and dozens of interviews, The Denver Post found significant environmental failures at Newmont's mines across the globe, including Lone Tree in Nevada.

Former employees complain that Newmont downplays or ignores environmental concerns raised within the company and in some cases retaliates against people who voice them."

How excellent that at least some Indonesian officials prefer to protect the interests of 'grassroots' Indonesians, instead of lining their pockets with company bribes. Anybody who has seen transnational mining companies in action will know that they operate by being allowed to cut corners by corrupt local officials, to the detriment of local villagers and the environment.

Now for Freeport...
