In a democracy, governments are supposed to seek the consent of the people. That’s not happening in Australia. The obvious evidence of this multiculturalism and mass immigration. There is no way this arrogant undemocratic nonsense would be agreed to if put to a vote. That’s why there has never been a vote on either. The political class knows it doesn't do well in referendums.

There are around 18 million Australian voters, only 226 federal politicians, and about 365 thousand federal bureaucrats, few of them powerful or influential.

Only about 10% of voters express dissent to politicians, by letter, phone, or email or face-to-face. Just voting against one side of the uniparty to ‘teach one side a lesson’ won't make any difference because both sides are guilty of pushing multiculturalism and mass immigration. One Nation says it will put a stop to both things, but … I don't see them getting enough seats to make much difference; the Coalition is as critical of them as Labor is. It was forecast that the uniparty would gang up on One Nation, and that is now a reality. Taylor has made it clear that he would prefer to be Opposition leader than form a government with One Nation.

Australia used to be exceptional; now it is barely mediocre, and getting worse. And 18 million voters don't seem to care. The kids not old enough to vote yet are brain-washed to the point of uselessness.

I reckon that generations after my own will see Australia slide much further:- mediocre > poor > inferior > abysmal > kaput.

I see your article is laced with plenty of anti-Labor vitriol, which leads me to believe you are biased against the government, and how it has managed the migration issue. Post Covid given the circumstance I believe the Coalition would not have acted in anyway differently. If you don't like what the government is doing you are free to campaign and vote for those who align more with your views, a person and a party like Pauline Hanson and One Nation.

This notion that government should put everything to the people, before enacting legislation is ludicrous nonsense, and would be totally unworkable.

I'm not anti Labor, Paul, I'm pro voter, and Albo Labor never ever sought a "mandate" for such extraordinary levels of immigration.

You can blame all of the economic and social problems on migrants, if you like, they're easy to scapegoat. The reality is economic and social problems are not all caused by migration; they arise from a complex mix of domestic policies, global economic shifts, and local infrastructure challenges. What you wont say is gross migration peaked in 2023, and has been declining ever since. 2020/21 saw a gross migration loss of -85,000, plus 500,000 temporary visa holders leaving Australia due to Covid, resulting in a severe skills shortage.
What I do say, is migration does need to be carefully controlled and managed, and skilled migrants are a valuable asset, you seem to lumps all migrants together in one overgrown figure. Your 1.5 million is out by 100,000 to 200,000,ABS but it sounds good.

Given your anti-migrant bias, I can see why you are attracted to the poplularism of Hanson, and One Nation. There is nothing new in extremists scapegoating minorities, by pushing the politics of grievance. In Australia, gays have too many rights, Aboriginals get it too good, Muslims are out to kill us, migrants are taking advantage of us, the list goes on and on. Its all about them and us, us being the good righteous majority, and them being the bad minorities, who want to take down the good, very simple.
