Property investors have gone on strike, and who can blame them? : Comments

By Brendan O'Reilly, published 13/7/2026

Property investors are also considered fair game for a litany of special charges including a 0.5% p.a. impost on their borrowings relative to owner-occupiers.

God…get out the violin; how pathetic.

This is exactly what needs to happen mate. Sydney median house prices are heading towards double their real value, and no, it’s not the end of the beautiful housing Ponzi scheme.
Let me tell you why. Simply because politicians are not the poor scum renters that the wealthy need as rent slaves to prop up their fading selfish dreams, no…

Politicians are law makers and breakers of the poor; that is their primary function! Oh, and of course, making them selves eye wateringly wealthy while sitting around the over supply of Parliaments on the comfortable padded chairs, pretending to hate each other, while pissing up as as a team in common bars. Pauline Hansons net worth I believe, is $20m. Poor little fish and fish shop owner!

This is all about them mate!

Now for the failing housing market not. Albanese is way in front of you.
Why do think Modi was parading his virtues at the MCG? Well, this is ALL about the housing market.
The wealthiest (just before or just after the Chinese) cohort are Indians: This is what will keep the real estate market, (the only “ market” that matters obviously), breathtakingly buoyant, and like Elon Musk moon rocket, forever going upwards. RELAX, have faith in your fav scumbag politician!

Don't cry for investors. They are already moving their money overseas thanks to what Albanese has done to the Australian economy. And others have switched from housing to massive data base ‘factories’ being built slap-bang up against housing in cities, and all over productive farmland in the countryside. (7's Spotlight last night).

The Socialist government was returned with an increase in seats at the last election. I say to these whingers, “tough titty”.

Cry me a river Brendon.

House prices have dropped. Slightly. For years people have complained loud and long about how unaffordable house prices have been. Now that they have dropped slightly, you cry foul. The sheer hypocrisy of self-interest exposed yet again.

The baying chorus of wingers complaining that Albo changed his mind is to blame. Anyone who trusts what any politician says needs to have their head read.

‘Investors’ invest in stuff they think will increase in value. Investing always has and always will carry some level of risk. That's the nature of the beast. If the value of what they invested in goes south, so be it. Don’t wine to me about it.

Get out the violin for Brendon, crying a river of tears for the poor destitute landlords. My wife and I own investment property, we also own our own home, which puts us in a very comfortable position. We have no problem with a fall in property values, they have absolutely skyrocketed in the past 10 years, great capital gains.

Totally the wrong take boys! Landlords don't get or expect sympathy, if they make losses, as many often do.

Warren Buffett, who made his fortune mainly on the stock market, is widely admired. Smart investor they all say. But what if he had made his money investing in property, especially residential property? The stereotypical cry would be "greedy" landlord. Even commercial landlords don't have to endure the hostility commonly shown towards residential landlords.

The reality is, like it or not, landlords provide an essential service. No landlords, no rentals. Tax them heavily and they invest elsewhere.

Hi Bren,

"No landlords, no rentals. Tax them heavily and they invest elsewhere."

There are a couple of issues at play here. Firstly a core Australian value of home ownership, and secondly the notion of a level playing field when it comes to taxation. The ethos of owning your own home is ingrained in Australian society to the point where it is incumbent on government to facilitate that "dream" wherever possible. The federal and state governments tried to do that, firstly by stimulating the supply side of housing, by the building of new houses, which didn't do nearly enough to boost individual owner occupation. The federal government realised that simply attacking the supply side wasn't working, and despite an election promise of not altering the existing taxation arrangements on investment properties, that was the only avenue open to them if they were going to stimulate owner occupation. With the taxation system so heavily biased in favour of investors, the government acted to level the playing field, braking an election promise in the process. Given the conditions that existed, what was the government to do? Other than altering negative gearing and capital gains tax.
