Schelling's philosophy of nature and the renewal of the earth : Comments

By Sam Ben-Meir, published 9/12/2025

Schelling saw nature not as object but as subject - a creative force we belong to, not command. His vision may be the ecological imagination our age lacks.

It is about time we, homo sapiens, realised and accepted that we do NOT own this planet, our only home, and are merely its custodians and hence must look after it and not destroy it.
We share it with all other animal species and are neither better , nor worse, than them although, as we are the only species which destroy it for our own greed, that last point is debatable.
Wake up humans, stop being parasites. There is no planet B.

What a wonderful, thought-provoking essay to come back to.
It has been my experience in life that many humans are indeed disconnected from the natural world. Exhibit A – as shocking and unbelievable as it sounds, a group of young apprentice chefs did not know where milk – cream – cheese came from. They had only ever experienced it pre-packaged on a supermarket shelf.
These same young people did not understand the seasonality of fruits and vegetables – i.e. when is asparagus at it’s best, can I grow cherries in June?
Another example - a recent comment in these forums along the lines of: If an animal can’t be eaten, what’s the use of it?
So yes, the disconnect between humans and nature is real.
Scream and shout, knock yourself out, but at least the indigenous cultures did try to take care of their home – planet earth. Sure, they didn’t build Hubble telescopes to discover the universe, or nuclear medicine. Such a pity that we seem incapable of both these things at the moment.
